Post-MSN Certification Admission Procedure

The admissions procedure is the same for both the Post-MSN Nurse Educator and Clinical Nurse Specialist certification and for either full-time or part-time study.


Step 1:  Apply for Graduate Admission to the University


Application Guidelines


Before a student is considered for admission to a post-baccalaureate program, they must have on file with the Office of the Graduate Admission the following documents:

  • A completed university graduate program application
  • Two MSN Personal Recommendation Form            
  • Application fee of $35
  • Official transcript showing completion of a bachelor or higher-level degree from a college or university that is accredited by a regional accrediting association (prerequisites must appear on the transcripts provided for admission is ordered to be considered)

Note: 

Eligibility to a specific program is determined by the specific requirements of the
academic department or school the student intends to earn a post-baccalaureate degree
or certificate.

Applications will not be processed without the application fee

Step 3:  Apply to the School of Nursing Graduate Program


Program Requirements


  • MSN degree from a National League for Nursing (NLN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited program
  • A 3.0 grade-point average (candidates with a grade-point average of 2.7 to 2.99 may be considered for provisional admission)
  • School of Nursing application
  • Two Professional Recommendation forms
  • Personal essay that demonstrates graduate level writing skills as well as the importance of graduate study at this point in your life
  • Personal interview with the Graduate Nursing Committee or at least one faculty member
  • Basic computer literacy which includes Outlook, Explorer, Word and the ability to conduct internet database searches.

OTHER PROVISIONS

To satisfy the requirements of clinical facilities, students will be required to provide proof of the following items:

  • Current California licensure as a registered nurse
  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR certificate from the American Heart Association
  • Proof of immunizations as well as a current TB screen and health assessment within 6 months.  Please use the School of Nursing Health form packet
  • Current HIPPA certificate
  • Per agreement with the San Diego Nursing Service Consortium and affiliate hospitals, a background check and drug screening will be required prior to your first clinical experience.  Failure to pass either of these will result in an inability to complete the program requirements.


Exceptions Policy:

Applicants who do not meet the above standards, but can demonstrate that they have an
exceptionally rich experiential background and/or have demonstrated dramatic change
in academic performance, may petition the School of Nursing to review their status.  The
School of Nursing will follow the exceptions policy as published in the current catalog.
