Public Safety Policy

a) Vehicle Registration - All vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds) are to be registered at the Public Safety Office within the first ten days of each semester. Vehicle registration is free, but there is a late charge if you register after the first ten days. There is no late registration charge if you purchase or obtain a vehicle after the registration deadline.

To register your vehicle on campus, an on-line component must be completed prior to coming to Public Safety to pick up your permit.

You must bring the following to Public Safety:

  • Your Vehicle
  • Your student I.D. card
  • Your driver's license
  • Vehicle D.M.V. registration
Reminder: Once online registration is complete, you must come to Public Safety Office to receive a permit. If you do not have this required information, you must come to the Public Safety Office and make arrangements for your individual needs.

b) Freshman Vehicle Policy – First-Year residential students are not permitted to bring vehicles to campus. This includes parking vehicles in the community neighborhood.

1) Freshman, for this University policy, is defined as any student who graduated from high school within the past two years. This classification does not change until the student completes two semesters at Point Loma Nazarene University.

2) Vehicles are defined as any freeway worthy vehicle (as defined by the California Vehicle Code).


Violations of this policy:


a. Freshman who violate the policy are subject to the policy as stated, fined $250 and 10 hours of community service.

b. Repeat violations are referred to Traffic Review Committee for further potential discipline and or referral to the University Judicial Committee

c) Parking

1) For commuter students, resident students and faculty/staff is enforced from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. unless otherwise posted.

2) DPS will post information in the ALERT newsletter to inform the campus community when lots will be reserved for special events.

3) The registered owner is responsible for his/her vehicle and all tickets received by the vehicle.

d) Bicycle Registration and Regulations


1) All bicycles are to be registered with the Department of Public Safety.

2) Riders are required to follow the same traffic regulations as vehicles (a copy of the vehicle code can be obtained from the Department of Public Safety).

3) Bicycles must be parked in bicycle racks and secured with a sturdy lock.

4) Bicycle placement and storage at your residence hall is determined by the Resident Director.

5) It is highly recommended that all bicycle riders wear a bike helmet.


e) Recreational Vehicles - Trailers, boats, motor homes, camper shells, jet skis, three- wheelers, four-wheelers, etc. are not allowed on campus without permission from the Department of Public Safety. These are subject to being impounded at the owner's expense if brought onto campus without permission from the Director of Public Safety.

f) Summer and Recess Storage - In order to leave a vehicle on the campus during the Summer Recess, you must get approval from the Department of Public Safety. This includes students, faculty and staff taking mission trips and campus travel groups.

  • All vehicles, bicycles, trailers, etc. left on campus without approval from the Director of Public Safety are subject to being impounded at the owner's expense.

g) Settling of Accounts - Payment of tickets is as follows:

  • Paid at the Cashier's Office in Draper Hall.
