RESEARCH/PUBLICATIONS/PRESENTATIONS

 

Currently directing a student research project on the impact of the HIV/AIDs epidemic on both the San Diego GLBT community and public/private institutions in the city and county from about 1982-1992.

 

Directed the research and writing of five students in my Seminar in San Diego History that resulted in the following publication:  Josh Grace, Megan Dukett, Christopher Rhamey, Kaylin Gill, and Ricky Bell, “Coming Out Gay, Coming Out Christian: The Beginnings of GLBT Christianity in San Diego, 1970-1979,” Journal of San Diego History, Vol. 53-3, Summer, 2007, pp. 117-125.

 

Sabbatical in the Fall, 2002, focused on a study of the Emergence of the Democratic Party in the City of San Diego, 1960 – 2002.  This work will lay the foundation for publications and a focus for student research in the new course scheduled in the Spring of 2004 – Seminar in San Diego History.

 

Prior research at PLNU has focused on the Theosophical Society at Point Loma, 1897-1942; academic research and creation of a slide library has included work at the following: Theosophical Archives in Altadena, CA.; Theosophical Archives in Ojai, CA.; Theosophical Archives at Point Loma Publications in San Diego, CA.; Local Archives at the San Diego Historical Society, UCSD, and California Room at the Public Library.  This research has led to presentations over 25 years at PLNU Chapels, PLNU New Faculty Seminars, Theosophical Societies in Europe (Arnhem, Paris, and Berlin); International Theosophical Conference at Point Loma; Ocean Beach Historical Society, Point Loma Library, Service Clubs, etc.  A special research interest which has not yet led to a publication concerns Katherine Tingley’s establishment of three “Lomaland” schools in Cuba at the turn of the century.

 

“Creating Symbolic Space: PLNU Past and Present,” a paper presented with Michael Lodahl,  for the PLNU Wesleyan Center’s Conference entitled “The Creative Imagination: Space, Time, and Form,” on February 6-9, 2002.

 

Consultant to the Cocopah Native American Tribe near Yuma, Arizona which led to the publishing of The Cocopah People by Anita Alvarez de Williams.  Phoenix: Indian Tribal Series, 1974.

“Katherine Tingley; The Theosophist as Progressive,” a paper presented at an International Theosophical Society Conference at PLNC, Friday, June 12-14, 1992.  The editor of the Theosophical History; A Quarterly Journal of Research (published by the Theosophical History Foundation located at the Department of Religious Studies, California State University, Fullerton) has asked for permission to publish the paper.

 

“Master Plan Implementation at Point Loma Nazarene College,” a slide presentation made to the West Regional Conference of the Society for College and University Planning in Scottsdale, AZ. in 1994.

 

“A Muckraker Looks at the Church of the Nazarene,” a paper sponsored by Nazarene Honorary Society Phi Delta Lambda presented at Olivet Nazarene College (May, 1967).

 

“Relationships between Christian Faith and Contemporary Events,” a series of Seminar Presentations at Mission Valley Church of the Nazarene, San Diego First Presbyterian Church, and Rancho Bernardo Community Church.
