Booting

Troubleshooting booting problems is a complicated issue because there are so many different problems that can occur. Below are some of the problems that you may encounter. Follow instuctions for the issue that your computer most closely matches. If your computer is having other problems not listed see Miscellaneous problems or call the ResTechs at x7378, or SERV.

Please read all the instuctions you are about to follow before attempting to repair your computer.

Absolutely nothing happens when power button is pushed:

This is normally going to fall under the hardware catagory.

    1. Check to make sure computer is plugged in and getting sufficient power.

    2. For notebooks first try removing the battery and unplugging the power, then wait a
moment. Try different combinations of the battery in and out with the power cord in and
        out.

    3. Try disconnecting all power sources (battery and AC power) and holding down the power
button while counting to 30. This helps to clear residual power from the computer.

If these solutions do not work then it is normally a problem with the power supply on desktops and a problem with the battery itself or the motherboard in notebooks. Hopefully the computer and part are still under warrenty.

Windows Error on start up:

This can normally be fixed unless the harddrive has failed.

    1. Run chkdsk.

    • Open My Computer
    • Right click on Local Disk (C:)
    • Choose Properties
    • Choose the Tools tab
    • Choose the Error-Checking Check Now button
    • Check both boxes
    • Choose yes when prompted to restart your computer

    2. Insert the Operating System (OS) CD and boot from it. Select to install the operating
system. Choose the option that lets you REPAIR the current operating system. This
should renew the current installation of windows back to its origional settings.

NOTE:
You will probably need to change the boot order of your computer to complete step 2.
To change the boot order see Booting from wrong device below.

Booting from wrong device:

This can be editied by looking in the BIOS.

    1. Open the BIOS.

    • Restart the computer and hit they key that prompts the opening of the BIOS (most machines are F2 or F12 )
    • Search the menu for the boot order and change it so that the order is:
      1. C: Hard disk
      2. CD-Rom
      3. External
      4. Network
NOTE: If you are trying to boot from the Operating System CD the CD-Rom option will need to
be number 1. Be sure to change back to C: Hard disk after you are finished repairing
your operating system and booting from the Operating System CD.
