YOUR COMPUTER IS...

Overheating:

  • Check to make sure your fan is running. It may be clogged with dust.
  • Is your battery hot? Check to see if your battery has been recalled by going the manufacturers website (ex: Dell.com).
  • Make sure you are not running a laptop on a heat-keeping surface, such as a pillow or bedspread. One temporary solution is to prop up the back of a laptop with a book to allow more airflow under the computer, which helps to cool it.

Running Slowly:

  • Defrag your computer (Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter).
  • How much hard drive space do you have left? Consider getting a larger hard drive if you don't have a lot of space left.
  • How much RAM (memory) do you have? Typical right now is between 512 MB and 1 GB. If you have less than that, you may want to get some more.
  • Run spyware/virus scans (see Spyware or Virus).

Getting a Blue Screen:

  • What does the error message say when the blue screen comes up. Write this down.
    • Anything about dumping memory means you probably need some more RAM, call a Tech for further assistance (x7378).
  • Start your computer in Safe Mode by restarting your computer and hitting F8 until an options menu comes up.
    • If your computer won't start in safe mode, please call the Techs at x7378
  • Run spyawre/virus scans.

Making Noise When You Turn it On:

  • If the noise sounds like a clicking noise, it's probably your hard drive, and you probably need a new hard drive.
  • High pitched noise:
    • check to make sure nothing is being clogged by dust or anything else, if so clean it out.
    • check to make sure your computer is not overheating, if so, see overheating above.

If you have any trouble with these instructions or have any questions, call the ResTechs at x7378.
