Spyware and Adware are also malicious programs that install on your computer, slowing it down and eventually crashing it if not taken care of. Some can also access passwords and data the you want to keep protected. They don't however, spread from computer to computer like a virus. Here are some ways to protect your computer from Spyware and Adware:
NOTE: A company, such as a bank, will never send out an email asking for your account number, password, social security number, etc. If you ever come across an email like this (or a suspicious website) do not respond, delete it, and if possible set it as junk email. 1. Download and run antispyware software.
2. Update your antispyware software. 3. Run a full scan. 4. Delete any malicious objects found and delete anything in the quarantine file. 5. Clear cookies and delete temporary files.
- Go to Start
- Control Panel
- Network and Internet Connetions
- Internet Options
- Select Delete Cookies
- Select Delete Files and check the box labeled "Delete all offline content"
Sometimes it may be necessary to turn off System Restore in order to delete or quarantine a really stubborn virus. Instructions can be found here. Please remember to turn System Restore back on when the virus is gone.
