Professor Sawyer has been at PLNU since 2007 serving as a faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology and director of the athletic training clinic. He is passionate about educating students in the classroom and clinical setting, serving athletes in the athletic training clinic and on the field, and working hard to make the athletic training clinic operate more efficiently and more effectively.

His experience includes two years working as an intern with the San Diego Chargers, research in exercise physiology, teaching athletic training courses at Cal State University Fresno, working as an athletic trainer at the secondary level in San Diego and Fresno, CA, and working as the associate athletic trainer for the Arena 2 football team the Central Valley Coyotes in Fresno, CA.


Research Interest:
Exercise economy, maximal oxygen consumption, and ACL injury prevention.

· February 2008: Co-Author of Reliability of the VmaxST, International Journal of Sports Medicine. To be published Fall 2008.

· October 2007: Poster presentation of master’s thesis: South West American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) meeting, San Diego, CA.

· October 2006 master’s thesis entitled: The Interrelatedness of Maximal Oxygen

Consumption and Economy. To be submitted for publication to Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.

· October 2006 Co-author of Educational Video A Coach’s Guide to Injury Prevention Strategies in the Female Athlete. Researched scientific database, compiled notes and outline for video, and filmed video. To be submitted for publication sometime in the near future.
