Mission

The mission of the Point Loma String Project is to provide a real-life teaching laboratory where PLNU string students are trained as effective string teachers and young San Diegans are trained as proficient string players.

Description

The Point Loma String Project is a lab school for Point Loma Nazarene University string majors learning to teach classroom strings. With financial support from PLNU, these selected string majors serve as teacher apprentices with master teacher Jane Frey and with project director and PLNU faculty member Dr. Philip Tyler. As teacher apprentices, they will gain valuable experience, confidence, and skills, and will enjoy a distinct advantage in the job marketplace upon graduation.

The project benefits numerous San Diego children as well. Each year, a new group of school-age beginners is accepted as new students in this lab school. They meet in twice-a-week string classes after school hours in Cooper Music Center at PLNU for just $300* a year to learn to play the violin, viola, or cello. (See calendar for dates and times of classes.) These same children will be welcomed back each year for the next level of string instruction.

The project is designed to complement and support the string teaching that occurs in San Diego Schools. Its aim is to improve string instruction in the schools through the development of young string players and through the training of new teachers. If your child's school does not have a string program, your child is just as welcome in Point Loma String Project as are those children in school string programs.

The Point Loma String Project, a member of the National String Project Consortium, is modeled after the pioneering string project at the University of South Carolina. Of the 26 sites in the consortium, PLNU is one of only two in California. The other is in Sacramento. See a map of string project sites around the country.
