Introduction

Welcome to the fifth edition of the Point Loma Nazarene University Student Handbook for music students. Each music major should have a copy. Vital information is included to make the student's participation in the life of the department easier and more convenient. The handbook is a compilation of information about the department, department policies and regulations, and suggestions to assist the student in making the most of the opportunities which are here. It is not a replacement for the university Catalog. It is an expansion of policies and programs defined in the Catalog. Readers will find the Student Handbook more complete and helpful than Catalog space permits. The Catalog is a quasi-legal document; the Student Handbook is a convenient guide. If there is discrepancy between the two or a question of interpretation, the Catalog alone is definitive and binding.

Department Description

The music department is one of several academic departments in the University. As such, it contributes to the university’s mission as described in the "Mission Statement" in the Catalog in everything that is done. The reverse is also true; the University contributes to the mission and life of the department in many ways. The University’s liberal arts focus is apparent within each academic department; in addition to the liberal arts degree, the music department offers professional degrees in music. The music department seeks to enhance the institution's mission effectiveness through its programs, performances and productions.
