Hundreds of Point Loma Nazarene University students, faculty and staff celebrated World AIDS Day on Friday, Dec. 1 by taking part in an orange T-shirt campaign through World Vision’s “Acting On AIDS.”
Orange T-shirts with the word “Orphan” were distributed to a select number of participating students, faculty and staff on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Over the next two days, more and more shirts were distributed, symbolizing the rapid increase of afflicted families across the globe. The “Orphan” represents a child who’s been affected with the death of a parent(s.)
The school held a resource fair along the campus mall that had booths of information on the epidemic of global AIDS. Earlier in the week, events and activities were held to try to raise awareness of this problem, including the showing of the HBO feature film “Yesterday,” which deals with a woman’s struggle to accept her life with AIDS, a candlelight prayer vigil with pictures of orphaned children on small wooden stakes, and a discussion on the issue with representatives from Nazarene Compassionate Ministries.
