PLNU receives $2.4 million donation for new science facility

During the celebration of its annual commencement, Point Loma Nazarene University President Bob Brower announced a $2.4 million initial gift for a new state-of-the-art science facility. The gift was given to the university in the name of Karl and Edith Sator, whose granddaughter is a recent graduate of PLNU’s science program, earning a degree in chemistry. The Sator’s grandson is also a PLNU graduate (2005).

"We are very thankful to the Sator family for their generous gift to the new science complex,” said President Brower. “Having had a student go through one of the science programs at PLNU, it is evident that the Sators felt that the type of teaching and mentoring being accomplished is special. It is affirming to see a family that believes this so much that they want to give back."

The capital campaign for the science complex will be officially kicked off and announced in the fall. The university is currently evaluating design and specification options in order to determine costs, which is estimated at $30 million.

The new science complex is the next step forward in advancing PLNU’s successful science program. Since 1989, PLNU science graduates who have applied to medical school have been accepted at a rate of more than 80 percent – about twice the national average. Point Loma alumni have also had consistently high acceptance rates into dental, master’s degree, and doctoral programs (about 95 percent). In addition, to date, students have co-authored more than 80 articles that have appeared in peer-reviewed professional journals.
