1/5/09 - On Sunday, Jan. 4, Dr. Carroll B. Land, Point Loma Nazarene University director of athletics and long-time head baseball coach, received the Jerry Kendall Character in Coaches Award at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Breakfast. The FCA breakfast was part of the three-day American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) convention held at San Diego's Marriott Marina hotel.

The Jerry Kendall Character in Coaches Award is presented annually to the college or high school coach who exemplifies the biblical character qualities of integrity, excellence, teamwork and service on and off the baseball field.

Dr. Land has served PLNU as a player, coach, professor and administrator for more than 50 years and was the president of both the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and ABCA. He has been enshrined in all three institutions' halls of fame.

During Dr. Land's 39-year tenure (1961-99) as university head baseball coach, the program tallied over 750 wins and qualified for 16 postseason appearances, capped by back-to-back NAIA World Series berths in 1993 and 1994.

In addition to his service to PLNU, the NAIA and the ABCA, Dr. Land has served for 16 seasons in association with the U.S. Military All-Stars in various positions, including head coach and pitching coach. He has been a board member of the United States Baseball Federation and the
1984 United States Olympic Committee.
