On Aug. 24, 2009, Douglas J. Miller Elementary School opened its doors for the first time. The newest school in the Panama-Buena Vista Union School was named for retired district superintendent and current Point Loma Nazarene University adjunct professor Douglas Miller.

Miller served the district for more than 37 years as a teacher, school principal, district administrator, and district superintendent. He retired from the district at the end of the 2006-07 school year. He is currently part of the faculty at PLNU's Bakersfield Regional Center.

"During his time as teacher, principal, and then superintendant, Doug really exemplified that education is all about doing the best we can for kids to learn. He made quite an impression on the board," said Judy Nightengale, the school's principal.

Douglas J. Miller Elementary currently serves approximately 624 children in grades K-6. There will be a dedication ceremony Oct. 8, 2009.
