On Aug. 24, 2009, Point Loma Nazarene University’s athletic
training education program (ATEP) was granted the maximum 10-year accreditation
offered by the Commission on the Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
The program was first accredited by CAATE in 2003. PLNU’s ATEP prepares
students to take the national certification exam administered by the
National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
“The site visitors sensed the deep relationships that we
form with our students and made specific mention of those relationships as part
of our uniqueness,” said ATEP director Jeff Sullivan, Ph.D., ATC. “CAATE also
recognized the strong support we have from our administrators and the
tremendous and innovative clinical internships that our students are afforded
at OASIS MSO, Rehab United Physical Therapy, Fassett-Allen Family Practice, and
Pacific Beach Urgent Care.”
According to Sullivan, much of the accreditation work was
completed last academic year. PLNU submitted its self-study report in fall 2008,
and the on-campus site visit, which involved members of the departments of kinesiology,
biology, and chemistry as well as PLNU’s Wellness Center, took place in spring
2009.
“Without a doubt, we emerge from the process a more refined ATEP for the
benefit of our students,” said Sullivan.
