Point Loma Nazarene University president, Dr. Bob Brower, will be honored at the UPLIFTing Citizens of San Diego Tribute & Spirit Awards on Saturday, Oct. 13. The awards are presented by Urban People Living In Faith & Trust (UPLIFT), a local outreach organization that has served San Diego’s inner city since 1987.
Brower is one of several San Diego community leaders who will be honored. Others include: San Diego Padres pitcher Trevor Hoffman; KGTV Channel 10 news anchor Carol LeBeau; Miles McPherson, pastor and founder of The Rock church; George Mitrovich, president of The City Club of San Diego; Kassim Osgood, wide receiver for the San Diego Chargers; Mayor Jerry Sanders; and Mark Larson, radio talk show host and program director for San Diego AM1700, who will serve as the event’s emcee.
“We chose to honor Dr. Brower because he’s done a remarkable job of bringing Point Loma into leadership positions in civic and community outreach,” said Monica Ball, board president of UPLIFT. “He’s done a lot to bring Point Loma off the hill and into the city.”
In addition to the awards ceremony and dinner, there will be a rooftop reception at the San Diego Natural History Museum, a silent auction, and an after-hours private tour of the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the museum.
The event will benefit UPLIFT and will help it to continue to oversee four diverse faith-based programs: Kids At Heart (academic tutoring), Swimming Upstream (life skills for teens), Senior Partners Plus (outings for seniors) and Triple Cross (re-entry support for homeless).
“For UPLIFT’s 20th anniversary, we wanted to honor uplifting individuals who are public in their expressions of faith and good works,” added Ball.
