March 2008 Edition
GREETINGS FROM POINT LOMA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY!
Thank you for reading this issue of the Parent's e-newsletter. I am often struck by the ways students describe their experience at PLNU. As I listened to a focus group of students recently, the most commonly used word to describe life at PLNU was 'community'. I thought that word was a very fitting descriptor, but I quickly found out that it had a different meaning to students than it did to me. When I thought of community I thought of big chapel services and events that brought the whole community together. What students in this focus group meant by community was really the one on one interactions that happen all over campus. Students and their professor, students and their RA, students and the rec room supervisor. This is very different than my definition, but I love this thought. As Point Loma seeks to shape students for life after college, those one on one shaping moments are what make PLNU truly unique. I am thankful for opportunities like the upcoming Family Weekend, when parents get to come to campus and be part of the PLNU community, no matter what definition you use.

Blessings on you,
Eric Groves
Director of Development

Hello from the Office of Residential Life.
March represents the halfway point of the Spring Semester but in Res. Life we are busy already preparing for next year.
Resident Assistants have been hired and are currently undergoing training.
The Peer Educator and Covenant Group Leaders (Cov. Groups are student-led Bible studies) are currently undergoing their hiring process.
Housing for next year is currently underway. Friday Feb. 29th was an important deadline, all off-campus and special housing applications were due. Special housing includes our Loma Living Communities. You can learn more about these here on the Loma Learning Communities website.
If your student has expressed interest in living off campus next year its important for them to realize they have to submit an application to do so, even if they are planning on moving in with family or a family-owned residence. Please encourage your student not to sign leases or commit to any off-campus living arrangement unless they have already been approved by the office of Residential Life.
In April students will choose their roommates and have an opportunity to select their rooms for next year. This month is a good time for them to begin considering their options and to critically think about their living situation for next year. You can help your student to make good choices by encouraging them to consider not just living with friends but to surround themselves with peers that will help them succeed. Sleep and study habits should be as important as friendships. The Resident Director of your student’s residence hall is a great resource during the housing process.
You can also help your student in the housing process by being sure their student account is current. Even if a family has enough resources for their semester bill there may still be a hold on the account, sometimes it’s something as simple as a needed signature or a tax return. In any case, encourage your student to pay attention to the communications between them and the Office of Student Accounts. Residential Life will also be helping in this process by making contact with students who have financial holds.
If financial aid is something your family wishes to explore please consider these options: Many of the Residence halls have Student Financial Aid Representatives. These are students employed and trained by The Financial Aid office to provide assistance and answer questions and they set up office right in the residence halls. While the deadline for priority filing has just passed applications for Financial Aid will continue to be accepted throughout the spring.
As always we here in the Office of Residential Life covet your prayers as we strive to support your students in a dynamic living and learning environment.
