GREETINGS FROM  PARENT COUNCIL!

Whether you are the parent of a freshman, a senior, or somewhere in between like me, the end of the 07/08 school year at Loma calls to mind much success and accomplishment.

First let me congratulate the parents of our graduating students who have completed their years here at the Point. I know that each of you have invested much time, energy, money and prayer into your child's future and their arrival at this stage of life. I am in awe of you and your dedication to seeing the journey through to completion! I remember sitting in the Greek that first day of NSO and being told in no time at all we would be back here celebrating graduation; I cried then and I tear up now remembering. Enjoy your day in the Greek - you've earned it! I applaud you and your student for completing the journey.

I believe that is what sets Loma apart...your participation in the education of the children we've entrusted to this university. This involves being there for them and at times not being there to rescue and let them grow from their experiences. It makes me smile when I am on campus and I see you drop in for a visit. The influence you have goes far beyond your own student. Community. Involvement. Investment. Thank you for your contribution to the success of so many more than your own!

Next year my time at Loma comes to an end. I've been a Loma parent for 7 years straight now! I plan to make the most of the summer and I hope you have an amazing break as well. Summer is such a great time to re-group, draw together as a family and create some new memories. Do it well, continue the legacy you have started. You are very loved and respected here among your fellow parents at PLNU. I look forward to hearing about your summer, celebrating the start of a new term in August and welcoming the incoming families with big smiles at NSO. And as always, please let any one of the Council know if we can be of encouragement to you during the break. It is an absolute honor and privilege to serve you!

REMINDERS FROM RESIDENTIAL LIFE

Residential students are allowed to stay in the residence halls up to 24 hours after their last exam, and then they must check out of the halls.  The exception to this policy is graduating students or students involved in graduation ceremonies.  They will have until noon on Sunday the 11th of May 2008 to check out of their room.

The reason for this move out policy is to ensure that students who have to stay all the way until Friday for exams can be in an environment that is quiet in order to give them the best chance to study.  Experience indicates that if students stay in the residence halls after they are done with their exams that sound volumes increase as well as damage.

Please also remind your student to follow the directions for checking out that they are given by their RD.  All of the check out procedures are done so that the building can quickly be turned around to be used for the Nazarene Youth Conference – Elev8.

STUDENT FINANCIAL SERVICES ANNOUNCEMENT

Is your student graduating?  Congratulations!  You must be SO proud.  We are proud of your students as well, and it has been a pleasure working with them and with you during their time here at PLNU.

Please remind your student to keep an eye on his/her account as we approach cap & gown pick-up (5/7 – 5/9).  Many end-of-the-semester fines will be placed on accounts the week of graduation, and all accounts must be paid in full before seniors will be able to pick up their caps and gowns in order to walk in the graduation ceremony.  Also, we will not be able to accept personal checks as payment to clear accounts, so please plan accordingly.  We are encouraging your students to check their accounts online by visiting their portals and clicking on “Current Statement of Account.”

Is your student is continuing at PLNU?  We are proud of them, too!  We will be sending out the first Fall 08 bill at the end of June.  It will be sent to each student’s permanent address and will be packed full of useful information, so keep an eye out for it.  Payment for fall will be due on August 4, 2008.  We are working on instituting an online payment option, so keep an eye out for information regarding that as well.

If your student is taking classes this summer, payment will be due upon receipt of the statement of account, which will be sent out in a couple of weeks.  Make sure that your student has met with an SFS advisor as well, to discuss financial aid and payment options.

Your students will be able to see their anticipated charges for summer and/or fall as soon as they register for courses by visiting their portal and clicking on “Forecasted Statement of Account.”  Keep in mind that charges may change as your student adds or drops courses.

Please contact us right away if you have any questions about your student’s statement of account.  We are called and committed to serving you and your students.  We can be reached at 619-849-2538 or sfs@pointloma.edu.

Have a great summer!

A YEAR IN REVIEW

PLNU News

News happens all over the Point Loma campus.  Please take a look at some of this year’s recent headlines…visit our News website.

Study Abroad

This year, more than 230 Point Loma students studied abroad for semester or summer sessions.  The growth and reputation of the program is receiving national attention. In the latest Open Doors study (http://opendoors.iienetwork.org/), PLNU ranked 16th (amongst Master’s Degree-granting institutions) for percentage of undergraduates participating and 20th for the number of students. Compared to the national average of 2%, PLNU is providing study abroad programs for over 10% of its students per year and is being used as a model by other universities.

More importantly, PLNU remains focused on serving students before, during, and after they study abroad, providing academic advising and cultural awareness training before they leave and re-entry programs to assist in their readjustment to the U.S. upon their return. It is when they return, that we see the true impact these academic experiences are having on students. Andra Jacques, one of the over 25% of this year’s graduating seniors who participated, says, "Studying abroad was absolutely the best decision of my life so far. My study abroad advisor encouraged me to go somewhere a bit different and I wound up in Sicily. I now encourage anyone I can to immerse themselves in another culture, and hopefully find out who they are in the process."

More Information visit the Study Abroad program's website.
