Nursery

Grounds Department also participates in the recycling program by reducing the amount of waste sent into landfills by several methods.
  • Composting
  • Green Recycling

  • Worm Farm

Composting

Decomposition is a natural process when organic material are broken down. In composting; however, the decomposition process is exhilarated and improved by human intervention.

Green Recycling

Green recycling refers to a process where plants or parts of plant are reused. An example of green recycling is chipping fallen tree branches or otherwise removed. The woodchips can then be used for mulch.

Nursery

The Nursery is a place where PLNU recycles a number of its plants. As certain plants grow beyond their season, they revert back to a hibernation stage. Those plants are then replaced with other plants that are newly in season. The Nursery has achieved over 50% turnover, which means we reuse over 50% of our plants.  We buy fewer new plants and recycle more. The Nursery is also the place where we nurture the worm farm and green waste composting takes place.

Worm Farm

There are many benefits of having a worm farm. It is a way to return much needed organic materials back into the soil. Two immediate benefits of the farm are compost materials, which are readily digested by plants, and natural liquid fertilizer a.k.a. "worm tea".
