THE SYMPOSIUM San Diego hosts an annual "Kyoto Laureate Symposium" each spring, which is the North American celebration of the three Kyoto Prize, an international award honoring those who have contributed significantly to humankind's scientific, cultural and spiritual development. The prize was developed by Dr. Kazu Inamori who founded Kyocera International, and is presented annually in Kyoto Japan by the Inamori Foundation.

Point Loma Nazarene University, through its Institute of Politics and Public Service, hosts the annual national press conference and a lunch honoring Dr. Inamori, the Inamori Foundation, and the three Laureates. In addition, the university sponsors a table at the Opening Gala, and a VIP Reception at which the university's Jazz Bands brings the entertainment.
To broaden public recogntion of the Prize and the Laureates, Point Loma also sponsores a Journalism Fellowship, allowing the recipient to attend the actual Award Ceremony in Kyoto. This year's Fellow was Pete Rowe.
