Psychology Department Registration Landmines

A Bulleted List of Must Knows

  • When you meet with your advisor:
    • Even if you are unsure of your schedule, be sure to have a draft of a possible schedule in hand (including sections and times).
    • Be on time for your advising appointment; don’t miss it unless you rescheduled your appointment in advance.
    • Failure to do the above will result in you having to schedule another appointment with your advisor. This might result in you failing to register on time.
  • PSY 308: Complete this course during your sophomore year. It will conflict with required courses if you wait until later.
  • PSY 390, 391 (a year long course)
    • Take PSY 390 during the spring of your sophomore year.
    • You must take PSY 391 in the semester following PSY 390 (no exceptions!)
    • MTH 203 (SPSS) is taken concurrently with PSY 390. If you cannot register for PSY 390 during your sophomore year, take MTH 203 during your sophomore year.
    • Take PSY 499 following PSY 391 if you would like to amplify your research study for possible presentation at WPA or RMPA.
  • PSY 400: If you are applying to graduate school during your senior year, take PSY 400 during the Spring semester of your junior year. All others take PSY 400 during your senior year.
  • MTH 203, PSY 321, PSY 325, and PSY 390: These courses are prerequisite courses for other courses. Take them as soon as possible. Please note that PSY 321 and 325 are not required for the General Psychology concentration; however, if you desire to take PSY 380 or 410 you must take these prerequisites.
  • Junior Year: Do your Graduation Check with the Records Office before Spring semester registration of your Junior year. This will ensure that there are no surprises during your Senior year, and that you will graduate on time.
  • At most Graduate schools, the General GRE is just as important (if not more important) than the Psychology GRE. Study for the General GRE during the summer following your Junior year. (The Psychology GRE will be covered in PSY 400.)
  • Remember that although you have a faculty advisor, it is your responsibility to follow the recommended sequence of courses. This will ensure that you can graduate without having the inconvenience of finding and taking a course at another University during your last semester at Point Loma.
