Message from the Director
A Message from Archie Yates, Director of Public Safety
Welcome to Point Loma Nazarene University!
Point Loma Nazarene University with majestic ocean views is home to over 1600 residential students each year. While the campus overlooks the Pacific Ocean in the lovely community of Point Loma, it is not immune to crime.
The Department of Public Safety exists to serve our community. Our services begin at our campus entrance with 24 hour coverage at the Welcome Center. Student dispatchers provide a welcome smile and visitor assistance, and the network video perimeter protection system provides an additional layer of security.
Our excellent student and staff officers provide a range of services from escorts, to jump starting a vehicle, providing AED support or First Aid to an injured individual. The staff will take incident and crime reports, and a method of confidential reporting is also available within our website. Should an emergency exist on campus, the Public Safety website will have updated information on a regular basis.
Point Loma Nazarene University has its own unique challenges for security and safety. Some of those challenges are those that every campus will face. One step of cultivating that safe experience is having knowledge of your surroundings. This is important to prevent crime and for personal safety. There are Crime Prevention topics located with the Public Safety web pages.
The campus annual security report is published by October 1st each year. Beginning in 2007, the annual security report for each campus will be available in electronic format unless a printed copy is requested. Anyone can access the annual security reports on the website and can print the report as well. Locally, San Diego Police Department provides assistance when necessary and they provide resources that are available to you. Their website: http://www.sannet.gov/police/ has information about crime within the city that you may find helpful.
Let me conclude with an invitation to contact our department should you have a question about Point Loma Nazarene University Department of Public Safety. Our contact number is 619.849.2201. Even though the crime rate is traditionally low here at Point Loma, we are situated in Americas’ eighth largest city and incidents of crime are not always predictable. Since we are not immune to crime, I urge you to prepare yourself by reviewing crime prevention materials, reporting suspicious behavior to the department, and filing reports of crime should you be a victim or a witness.
My best to you,
Archie Yates, MBA PLNU Director of Public Safety
