What to Bring, What to Leave at Home

Can I bring appliances?

Only certain appliances are allowed. Students may have:
  • coffee pots
  • blenders

Can I bring a television set?

Yes. The Office of Telecommunications provides cable television (CATV) service to the University community via the campus-wide broadband system. Programming includes educational, informational, and entertainment channels and broadcasts. This service is paid for through a student fee.

Each residence hall room has one available connection for cable TV. There are also televisions in publicly accessible areas across campus for entertainment use, including residence hall lounges.

Each hall has a television set in its lounge. Students are not allowed to watch unedited movies rated "R" or higher according to MPAA guidelines on these sets.

Nicholson Commons Recreation Room has a television which has expanded channel access, but the Recreation Room does not permit the viewing of programming that would receive higher than a "PG" rating according to MPAA guidelines . Please note that this restriction may include programming which receives a "PG" rating with qualifiers such as V, S, L or D according to TV Parental Guidelines . In all viewing environments, we ask that you practice discretion in what you take in as entertainment, and to avoid partaking in programming that is damaging to a Christian lifestyle.

If possible, you may wish to contact your roommate(s) prior to coming to PLNU about this issue. Two or more television sets will leave very little extra space in your room. In fact, studies show that students do better in school without all the extra "entertainment features".

Can I bring a sofa?

Yes, you can bring a recently purchased love seat sized sofa only. Please see new furniture policy for 2007-2008.

Can I bring a stereo?

Yes. However, we do ask that you practice consideration for your fellow students and keep the volume to a reasonable level and comply with requests to lower the volume. Also, as with television programming, we ask that you practice discretion in what you listen to and avoid listening to music that is damaging to a Christian lifestyle. We also ask that those who only listen to Christian music are tolerant of those whose musical tastes differ.

If possible, you may wish to contact your roommate(s) prior to coming to PLNU about this issue. Two or more stereo systems will leave very little extra space in your room. In fact, studies show that students do better in school without all the extra "entertainment features".

Can I bring a surfboard?

Yes. However, it must be covered at all times while in the Residence Hall. An uncovered surfboard can be the cause of a hefty fine due to the potential for carpet damage.

Can I bring a bicycle?

Yes. All halls contain conveniently located bicycle racks or special rooms. Bicycles must be registered with Public Safety, which is free at any time during the year. Helmets and other safety gear are recommended, but not required. Locks are also highly recommended.

Can I bring a skateboard/roller skates/rollerblades?

Yes. But skating is only allowed on the Young Hall basketball court. Skating in the halls will result in a fine. Helmets and other safety gear is recommended, but not required.

I locked my key in my room! Can I just take off a screen to get in?

No. If you remove a screen, you will be charged for its replacement. PLNU Residential Life believes that window screens are essential to room security. If you can't get in your room, contact a Resident Assistant (R.A.) and they will be happy to let you in, provided that their letting you in isn't a frequent occurrence. If you have completely lost your key, you will be charged a fee to replace it.

Can I cut down some of those tree branches to give myself a better view?

No. The trees are maintained as they are for the beautification of the campus. While we regret your inconvenience, the entire campus benefits from this beautiful foliage.

Can I leave through the emergency exits? It saves me a walk.

No. In most cases, the emergency exits are meant for just that: emergencies. If you are caught opening them in a non-emergency situation, you will be fined heavily. Their closure is necessary for security purposes in the Residence Hall. A rare exception is during high traffic period such as move-in and move-out periods. If a Resident Assistant or Resident Director has opened the door, you may use it for entrance and exit.

I don't like these low-flow showerheads. Can I remove them?

No. The showerheads are there to conserve water and lower PLNU's bills, which in turn is passed on to the student in the form of lower room and board costs than there would be otherwise. In addition, improper removal of the heads can damage the shower nozzle. Removal of the showerheads will result in a fine.

Can I baby-sit in my room?

No. PLNU Residence Halls are not equipped to be baby-safe. The potential for accidents is enormous. You may babysit off-campus, but we do ask that you inform your hall's " Box " exactly where you will be and how long you expect to be there, for safety's sake. In addition, babysitting contacts can be coordinated through PLNU Student Employment .

Can I move the furniture from the lounges into my room?

No. Lounge furniture is there for the benefit of the entire Residence Hall community.

Can I park in the R.A. parking space if there are no other spots available?

No. PLNU understands and regrets the difficulty of finding parking on campus during peak activity, but those spaces are reserved. The R.A.'s need quick access to their job site, the Residence Hall, in order to serve you better. Parking in these spaces will result in a fine.

What can't I have in my room?

For various reasons, PLNU insists that certain items not be in the Residence Halls. These include, but are not limited to:

Out of concern for room damage, PLNU asks that students not decorate their room using contact paper, large nails or stickers. Also, PLNU asks that students not bring items which are an inherent fire hazard such as candles or incense.

Certain items, such as pornographic/suggestive materials, alcohol, tobacco or controlled substances have no place in life at PLNU, and will not be tolerated in Residence Hall rooms.

Also, items which are illegal by local laws are not allowed. These include fireworks and stolen street signs. Street signs are allowed if you possess a legal receipt for their purchase.

For safety reasons, cinder blocks are not allowed in Residence Halls.

Pets and other animals are not allowed. The University facilities are not equipped or intended to provide accommodation for them. The only exception is that On-campus Residents may keep fish in a ten-gallon or less fish tank in their room.

The following list also details further prohibited items:

  • Weapons, which include but are not limited to, firearms, bows and arrows, darts, knives (in excess of 3’’), clubs, swards, BB guns, air guns, brass knuckles, fishing spears, and martial arts equipment.
  • Flammable materials, which includes but is not limited to, fireworks, explosives, combustibles, propane, gasoline, or any other highly flammable chemicals.
  • Open flame objects which include but are not limited to candles, oil lamps, and incense.
  • Items hanging from the ceiling or sprinkler systems.
  • Tripping hazards such as jumbled cords or lights.
  • Cheater boxes, ungrounded extension cords, or extension cords without power surge protector.
  • Items blocking door entries/exits, hallways, stairs, or emergency exit doors.
  • Unapproved appliances which include but are not limited to hot plates, hot pots, George Foreman grills, broilers, toaster ovens, lava lamps, space heaters, and air conditioners.
  • Fresh Christmas trees in any residence hall space, including all of Flex housing.
  • Lofted beds and unapproved bed risers including the use of cinderblocks
  • An inventory for all provided residence hall furniture in both the lounge and individual rooms
  • Additional furniture that exceeds size limit for individual residence hall rooms.
  • Personal furniture or belongings outside of the room. Flex may only place outdoor furniture only on their porch or balcony.
  • Windows and screens are intact with no posters or decals on the window.
  • Illegal street signs or street signs without a receipt.
  • Pets other than fish in a ten-gallon or less tank
  • Uncovered surfboards
  • Unsanitary conditions that might invite rodents, bugs, mold, or health hazards
  • Inappropriate décor which includes but is not limited to ornamental use of items identifiable as alcoholic beverage bottles/containers and inappropriate posters, pictures and magazines.
  • Cork board, paneling, contact paper, and wallpaper attached to the walls, beds, or drawers.

If you possess any of these items in your room, and they are discovered by the R.A. or R.D., you will be fined. For full details, please attend your residence hall's " all hall meeting " which is scheduled during the first month of classes.

Can I put things into storage in the hall?

No. If you wish to store items, you must make other arrangements. While PLNU previously accepted limited storage, the University found that liability issues were a concern, as well as the fact that the University facilities were incapable of providing this service for all students. Students should make an effort to know how large their rooms will be, and only bring what they will need.

Also, your roommate contact information has been provided for those who were assigned roommates. We ask that you try to contact your roommates to insure that only one of the items that a small room only needs one of (such as television sets, stereos, etc.) Remember, the less you bring, the less you have to take home at the end of each year.
