Residence Hall Furniture Policy

2009-2010

During the 2006-07 and 2007-08 school years, a number of PLNU residential students experienced disruption and dislocation due to the existence of bed bugs in several residence halls. The primary method of infestation was the transmission of bugs to campus on used furniture. PLNU responded comprehensively in treating this problem and conducts proactive inspections on a regular basis.

For significant health and safety reasons students are not allowed to bring the following items to campus:

  • Any upholstered furniture, including futons
  • Any pillows, cushions, bean bags, that are too large to fit in a dryer

Students are allowed to bring:

  • Pillows, cushions, bean bags that can fit into a dryer

Before bringing the allowable items students must:

  • Pre-treat*1 any cushions, pillows, bean bags, duffel bags, book bags, and small suitcases prior to bringing in to the residence hall
  • Store these items and desk chair inside a house, rather than in a garage, during breaks from classes
  • Visually inspect all items prior to moving them into a residence hall

*1Pretreatment consists of placing an item in a large capacity dryer on the highest setting for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Note: A student whose property introduces a bed bug infestation may be financially liable for part or all of the cost of treatment and their property may be confiscated.
