New Furniture Policy FAQs

While we know that this policy is difficult for many, we know that we can work on this together to ensure the health, safety, and comfort of our community. Residential Life has been asked to enforce this policy without exception. Several students have asked for clarification on several items relating to this policy that we will address below:

  1. When must the receipt be dated? After May 31, 2007.

  1. What will happen if a student decides to bring unapproved items? If a student brings an unapproved item they will enter the discipline process which will include a $100 fine and 20 hours of community service and the student will be responsible for immediate removal of the unapproved items. There may also be other disciplinary responses given.

  1. How do I get my new items approved? Give your receipts dated after 31 May 2007 to your RD or RA when you check in and show them the items. These receipts will be stapled to your check in form.

  1. Are desk/computer chairs included in this policy? The answer to this question is YES. If you want a padded desk/computer chair it must be new with a receipt. However, we do discourage students from bringing their own chairs as the school does provide desk chairs for each student, which must remain in the student’s room. Some of these chairs are hard chairs, so we recommend bringing a new seat cushion if you feel that that would help for your comfort.

  1. Links to some new inexpensive furniture: We have done some searching online for new inexpensive furniture and are providing a list on our website.

  1. What is being done to rooms on campus in regards to bed bugs? The full plan of what has been done and what is going to be done is available online.

  2. Do other institutions have similar furniture policies? The answer to this question is YES. Many institutions had similar policies in the past for health and fire safety reasons, and many more are implementing them this year as the bed bug problem has been fairly widespread across the country.
