Point Loma Nazarene University offers specially designed credential and graduate programs for beginning and experienced teachers in earning the preliminary and professional clear credentials, and the Masters of Arts in Education in Teaching and Learning or Masters of Special Education.

The coursework in this blended program of graduate study honors evidence of candidate proficiency from BTSA work and intensive district and special education professional development.

Required Courses:

  • The MA in Teaching and Learning or Special Education requires 36 semester units.
  • The Level II Special Education Credential for both mild-moderate and moderate-severe require 18 semester units of coursework.
  • Six units aligned with required PLNU coursework may be transferred into the program from other accredited institutions of higher education. Vist PLNU catalog at www.pointloma.edu/grad for more information.
  • Year 1 and Year 2 BTSA teachers who are Level II or MA candidates are enrolled in a carefully planned sequence of PLNU courses taken at the Mission Valley campus.

Credential & Degree Requirements:

A PLNU credential Analyst will review the transcripts and credential renewal requirements and a specialized program plan will be established for each candidate.

All PLNU courses are performance-based with applied fieldwork and require evidence of improved teaching and student learning in the candidate's classroom.

  • Candidates in the MA program should take 7 semesters to complete their program.
  • Admissions Portfolio Requirements Application and Matriculation Fee of $35
  • Two completed PLNU recommendation forms from colleagues who have directly observed the candidate's work in education
  • Bachelor's degree posted on an official transcript
  • 3.00 cumulative GPA
  • Official transcripts from accredited institutions
  • Copies of valid teaching credentials
  • Valid CBEST certification
  • A current Resume of educational and professional experiences

For MA Candidates only:

  • A one page writing samples describing professional and career goals and experiences & the Graduate Record Exam and/or the Millers Analogies Test GRE or MAT
