Many school districts need teachers with intern credentials to meet unfilled needs for credentialed teachers in elementary, middle and high school and special education (mild/moderate and moderate/severe). The School of Education has partnerships with specific districts, county offices and consortia and offers the intern credential program for qualified multiple subject, single subject, and special education credential candidates ( mild/moderate and moderate/severe) to allow them to work as contract teachers with strong support from PLNU expert faculty as they earn their preliminary credential. The intern program is ideal for:
- Paraprofessionals with B.A. degrees,
- Candidates with a strong background in private and non-public schools,
- Candidates who are changing careers with a strong background in mathematics and science,
- Candidates with exceptional maturity and a special disposition for working with moderate to severely handicapped students.
The prerequisites for applying for an intern credential include:
- Bachelors degree from an accredited school of higher education
- Subject Matter Competency (like the CSET)
- CBEST Passing Scores
- U.S. Constitution (state approved course or passing score on exam)
- Offer of employment in a local school district
- EDU 506 (40 hours of EL instruction)
With these prerequisites in place, a candidate can then apply for admissions to the university and the teacher credential program.
An advisor will establish a program plan to complete the preliminary credential and shares options for pursuing the professional clear credential and the Master of Arts in Education degree.
A credential analyst will assist the candidate in applying for an intern credential. Internships are offered in Arcadia, Bakersfield, and Mission Valley.
