Preliminary (37 Units)


Professional Clear (30 Post B.A. Units  and Advanced Coursework)


The School of Education offers a specially designed multiple subject teaching credential program for candidates seeking to teach at the elementary grade levels or in K-12 self-contained, general education classrooms.


Preliminary Credential


The preliminary multiple subject teachering credential (37 units)  prepares entry level teachers with a rich blend of research-based learning theory and structured opportunities to apply their learning in field-work and student teaching experiences in K-12 classrooms supported by expert Point Loma faculty and practicing master teachers. 

Point Loma preliminary credential candidates develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to be highly qualified, higher performing educators of noble character in an age of assessment and accountability for student learning.

This credential program is ideal for:

  • Undergraduates at Point Loma's main campus aspiring to be elementary grade level teachers,
  • Post B.A. graduates who are seeking to teach in a K-12 self-contained classroom.
  • Private school or charter school teachers seeking a California credential.
  • Those seeking a new career in the field of education.

Professional Clear Credential (30 Post B.A. Units and Advanced Coursework)


All preliminary multiple subject credential graduates working in K-12 public schools will obtain their professional clear credential as part of a BTSA Induction program offered by school districts and consortia. 

The School of Education offers an approved 2042 Fifth Year Program for private school, charter school, and out-of-state teachers who have the option of clearing their preliminary credential with an alternative program to BTSA as indicated on their preliminary credential.

This PLNU professional clear credential program requires 30 post B.A. units including four advanced credential courses taken AFTER the completion of the preliminary credential:
  • GED628  Using Technology to Support Student Learning (3 units)
  • GED639  Health Education (3 units)
  • GED642  Teaching Strategies for English Learners (3 units)
  • GED677  Teaching Strategies for Special Populations (3 units)

Students who completed their preliminary credential program as an undergraduate student can work with their advisor to design a program which will meet the clear credential requirements of the 30 post B.A. units.  One option may be to complete the Masters of Arts concentration in Teaching and Learning.

Convenient Class Schedules and Summer Offerings

Class schedules for both credentials are offered at convenient times to accommodate working professionals.  There is a full summer schedule for candidates wanting continuous enrollment during the summer months.
