What needs to happen during the ministry?

Student Commitment to Christ…

Above all, the student is expected to be committed to a growing and intentional relationship with Jesus Christ.

Pastoral and Student Commitment to Communication…

During the summer, the student works in a “full-time” context for the church family. The pastor must have a clear and current vision for the student, and the student is expected to be respectful and supportive of that vision.

This is a relationship of trust and loyalty, and each student is trained and equipped to serve in that context. There will still need to be regular times of feedback, training, and equipping. These PLNU students that are willing to come and serve are courageous and show extreme initiative, but they do need direction and encouragement.

It is expected that the pastor will serve as a mentor to the student, will be protective and courteous, and will be committed to the student’s spiritual and professional growth. Regular times of communication, vision, purpose, and job related feedback are expected and necessary.

Professionalism…

Professionalism is expected from all involved. Students are trained in maintaining professional boundaries when it comes to sensitive ministry issues of conduct, ethics, and relationships. Students are not allowed to have any sort of dating relationships with church members or other students and are instructed to never be alone with someone of the opposite gender, especially someone not of legal age. These and other issues are discussed in training, but should be explicitly outlined by the pastor when the student arrives.

Grace…

At some point, everyone involved in this student-church-pastor-PLNU relationship will make mistakes. Grace must be at work along with quick and intentional communication to resolve any outstanding issues.
