  4. (Blue) This form informs the office of your interest in studying abroad and helps advisors to better prepare program recommendations and other information specific to you.

  5. Research study abroad programs.
  6. Study abroad promotes independent thinking. The OIS is here to provide suggestions, recommendations, and relevant insight on study abroad programs, but it is important that you begin this independent experience by researching which programs support your own personal academic and career goals for studying abroad.

  7. Apply for PASSPORT!!
  8. As soon as you make a decision to study abroad (anywhere outside the U.S.) you MUST apply for a U.S. passport. Information and application material can be found at www.travel.state.gov. You can apply online or at the Post Office on Midway Drive in Point Loma. If you currently have a passport, it must be valid for six months beyond the time you will be returning to the U.S.

  9. Apply to study abroad program.

  11. Apply for Student VISA!!
  12. Several countries (the U.S. included) are tightening security and making the process for applying for student visas more intensive. As soon as you are accepted to your program, you MUST apply for your visa (if required) through the consulate of the country you will be visiting. Visit www.travel.state.gov for more information.

  13. Fill out Off-Campus Clearance Form and PLNU Request for Off-Campus Credit.
  14. (Brown) These forms clear you to study off-campus through Student Financial Services, Housing, the Post Office, and the OIS. • Check with your insurance company to be certain you have valid medical insurance and vaccinations for travel.
  • If your program does not provide an International Student I.D. (ISIC) card, the OIS will provide one for you.

All study abroad participants are required to attend a pre-departure workshop before being cleared to receive academic credit.
