Class of 1949 Endowed Scholarship for Study Abroad


Nine years ago, the Pasadena/Point Loma Class of 1949 very generously set up an endowment to be used specifically to assist students studying abroad.  Scholarships of up to $500 are now available to students!

DAAD Grants for Study and Research in Germany 2010/2011


The latest edition of the annual booklet Grants for Study and Research in Germany  has arrived! This comprehensive catalogue contains all of the grants that DAAD currently offers US and Canadian students and scholars and is divided into specific categories for undergraduate, graduates, PhD candidates/postdocs and faculty.

DAAD is also pleased to announce the availability of three DAAD trifold brochures that feature specific DAAD programs:
  • Undergraduate scholarship in Germany: All of DAAD's funding programs for undergraduate applicants

IES Abroad Scholarship


More than 1 million dollars in scholarships and aid is available to students studying through IES Abroad in Spring 2010.

Gilman Scholarship


Description:

This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

The program aims to support students with financial need, diverse ethnic background, and from a variety of institutions.  It strongly encourages students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia.


Eligibility:

The Gilman Scholarship is open to all US citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below.
  • The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of their study abroad.
  • The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
  • The applicant is studying abroad for at least 4 weeks in one country.  Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least 4 weeks.
  • The applicant is studying abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the State Department's current Travel Warning list.
  • The applicant is studying in the fall, spring, or academic year terms including winter inter-sessions.  Summer only programs are not eligible. 

Award Amount:

Over 1,200 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000.


Spring 2010 Deadlines:

Online application opens: August 2009
  • Student deadline for submission of online application: October 6, 2009
  • Postmark deadline for undergraduate transcripts: October 9, 2009
  • Advisor deadline for submission of online Study Abroad Advisor and Financial Aid Advisor certification: October 13, 2009

Diversity Abroad


DiversityAbroad.com is proud to announce three new scholarships aimed at increasing participation among minority students in education abroad.

DiversityAbroad.com Scholarship (sponsored by AIFS)

DiversityAbroad.com, in cooperation with AIFS, will award twenty $1000 scholarships for students studying abroad during the 2009-2010 academic year. Six will be offered in the fall, six in the spring, eight in the summer.  Click here to see if your program qualifies.

Diversity Abroad & Semester at Sea Scholarship

This scholarship is meant to increase access to Semester at Sea's global educational opportunities to students from diverse and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.  Up to ten scholarships will be awarded for the summer voyage.  Up to five scholarships will be awarded for the fall voyage.  Scholarship award amounts are equal to 50% off the cost of the least expensive cabin category available at the time of confirmation.

Study Abroad Turkey for minority students (Fall 2009 & Spring 2010)

The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) in cooperation with DiversityAbroad.com are awarding $2,000 semester, $1000 summer, and $500 short term scholarships for study abroad programs in Turkey.  Applicants must be undergraduate African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Native-American students who have already applied and been accepted to participate in a study abroad program at a Turkish University.  Click here for more information.

Foundation for Asia Pacific Education- STA Travel Scholarship


The mission of this foundation is to help young adults in North America become global citizens and leaders who understand Asia Pacific’s role as the hub of an increasingly interconnected world.  It works to raise funds to assist students in gaining cultural and academic experiences in the Asia Pacific region.


General Scholarship Amount:

$500-$1,500

STA travel is offering $10,000 in scholarships for students majoring in Photography, Film and Art, Travel and Tourism, International Business, International Studies and Foreign Language.
STA Travel Award Amounts: $1,000-$2,000


Deadlines:

  • Programs beginning September 1 through December 31, 2009: Deadline is August 31, 2009
  • Programs beginning January 1 through April 30, 2010: Deadline is December 31, 2009

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship


The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. Nearly 800 scholarships were awarded for study in 2005-06. Through grants totaling approximately US$500 million, recipients from about 70 countries studied in more than 70 nations

Interested applicants must apply for Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships through their local Rotary club.  Availability and timelines vary by Rotary district.  For 2009-10 awards, club deadlines may be as early as 1 March 2008 or as late as 15 August 2008.

There are three types:
  • Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships: A flat grant of $24,000 for one academic year of study in another country.  This is the most common type of grant.
  • Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships: Help fund two years of degree-oriented study in another country. A flat grant of $12,000 is provided each year.
  • Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships: Help finance either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country. They provide a flat grant of $11,000 for three months and $16,000 for six months

Alliance for Global Education Scholarship


The Alliance for Global Education is offering up to two scholarships of $6,000 and up to 20 scholarships of $2,500, as well as smaller amounts of up to $2000 for semester programs and up to $1000 for summer programs during the 2008-09 academic year.

Students must already be accepted into an Alliance program.  These will be need-based, with preference given to minorities and students from non-traditional majors.

Deadline:
Spring: November 15
Summer: April 1

Bridging Scholarship and Morgan Stanley - Japan


Description:

The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project awards 100 scholarships each year to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan.  The scholarships are funded by donations from private foundations and major U.S. corporations.  Sixty eight scholarships for Fall 2009 have already been awarded.
Each scholarship recipient will be expected to send a brief report about his or her study in Japan to the ATJ office within 60 days of returning from abroad.

Award Amount

Semester- $2,500
Year- $4,000

Eligibility:

Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Spring semester Deadline:

October 6, 2009.  Selection will be made by a committee and will be based on academic potential and financial need. Applicants will be notified of results by November 25.

Description & Eligibility for morgan stanley scholarship:

Morgan Stanley will award two $7,500 scholarships to undergraduate students who will be studying abroad in Japan during the entire 2009-2010 academic year.  Applicants must have an interest in economics and international finance, already be accepted to a program in Japan, and be juniors or seniors.

Applicants must submit an essay on one of several designated public-policy topics together with an application for the Bridging Scholarship program.  Morgan Stanley management in Tokyo  will make the final selection of scholarship recipients.

Boren Scholarship (National Security Education Program)

 
Created in 1991, the National Security Education Program (NSEP) focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security.

Boren Scholarships for undergraduate students, provide up to $20,000
for an academic year to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.  These countries include Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East.  The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security.  Boren Scholars also study less commonly taught languages.

Deadline:

The application deadlines for the 2010/2011 school year are:
  • Grad Students: January 28, 2010
  • Undergrad Students: February 10, 2010 
Boren Fellowships are for graduate students, provide up to $30,000 for
language study and international research.

Fulbright (post-graduation)


In 2007, the Fulbright Commission Awarded approximately six thousand grants  to U.S. students, teachers, professionals, and scholars to study, teach, lecture, and conduct research in more than 155 countries, and to their foreign counterparts to engage in similar activities in the United States. 

The award amount of all grants totaled $262 million in 2007.  An annual appropriation from Congress to the Department of State is the primary source of funding for the Fulbright grants. Participating governments and host institutions in foreign countries, and in the United States, also contribute financially through cost-sharing and indirect support such as salary supplements, tuition waivers, and university housing.

More than 1,500 U.S. students receive a Fulbright grant each year to go overseas.  Students of all fields of study can apply.  Undergraduate seniors must apply through their campus Fulbright Program Advisor.

Rhodes Scholarship (post-graduation)


The Rhodes Scholarship is a prestigious and competitive award for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year.  The Rhodes Trustees provide tuition, a living stipend, and the necessary costs of travel to and from Oxford.  Students may also apply to receive additional grants for research purposes or study-related travel.

Students in all fields of study are welcome to apply.  They should exhibit personal and intellectual distinction as well as a commitment to world service.

American Rhodes Scholars are selected through a decentralized process by which regional selection committees choose 32 Scholars each year from among those nominated by selection committees in each of the fifty states.

National Deadline:
  • October 5th (campus deadlines will be earlier)
  • Deadline for submissions of institutional endorsement and referee letters: October 13th
  • District Interviews: November 20 & 21

Student Diplomat Essay Competition


Need some extra cash after your semester abroad?  The NAFSA Association of International Educators and the global education magazine Abroad View are sponsoring an essay competition for all students who have studied abroad since 2004.  The essay must be between 1,000 and 1,500 words and focused on how your experience abroad contributed to global understanding for the US.


Award Amount:

$150 cash and a $300 STA Travel voucher

National Geographic Glimpse Correspondent


The Glimpse Correspondents Program is an exciting opportunity for talented young writers and photographers who will be abroad for at least 10 weeks. The program encourages participants to engage with people from other cultures, to seek out thought-provoking experiences, and to share their stories from abroad.
