Palm Computer

  • It is: a shirt-pocket sized, hand-held person computer/organizer
  • It can: store and display information
    • Beam information to another similar machine across the classroom or into a hall
  • Watch out for: students checking their pockets, purses or laps 
    • Pointing at other students to beam information
    • These can be easily hidden in baggy clothing
  • Prevention tip: Tell students in advance that palm computers will not be Allowed in class during tests and will be confiscated

Programmable Calculator

  • It is: a portable, hand-held calculator for science and math calculations
  • It can: do a broad range of math applications from algebra to calculus
    • Do interactive geometry, symbolic manipulation, stats, and 3-D graphing
    • Display text as well
  • Watch out for: students who do poorly in class and very well on the test
    • Students pointing to transfer information electronically
  • Prevention tip: have a classroom set of simple calculators for student use.
    • Do not allow students to use calculators from home on the test.

Pager or pager watch

  • It is: a small, wearable message receiver
  • It can: send or receive messages and e-mail
  • Watch out for: students who look frequently at their watch
  • Prevention tip: Inform students in advance about pagers not being allowed in class.
    • Warn them that these pagers will be confiscated if used during testing.
