This is another double-entry assignment where the student places in the right-hand column her commentary on the text or her response to study questions. In the left-hand column the student reflects on how she arrived at these ideas.
Asking students to actually reflect on their thinking process helps them become more aware of what steps actually go into thinking and actively works towards creating students who will be lifelong learners because they have better understanding of the learning process. It also encourages students to become self-encouragers by giving them the opportunity to see how their own thought process becomes surer throughout a semester. In addition, a meta-cognitive journal actually creates better learning within the discipline and actually yields better information transfer.
