CMS Best Practices

CMS Best Practices Unknown (or inaccessible) property:CurrentPageVersion.PageID

To all CMS Web Developers

We will be listing CMS best practices on this page. Please check back often. Thank you.

CMS BROWSER TIME OUT

We recommend anytime you work on child pages for longer than five minutes, please save or publish the page often as you work on it.  Pages you save on the CMS will tagged as "Draft".  You can go back to a draft to publish it. Please be aware the CMS will time out your session/login after 10 minutes of no activity. Your work will be lost if you time out of the CMS and you have not saved your work.

You may also chose to write in MSWord, which does not time out. Then come back to the CMS to create your child page once you have finished creating the page in MSWord.

URL TITLES

We recommend everytime you create a new child page in the section for URL TITLE do not leave any spaces or use any special characters (ex. !, &, #, $, etc.).   The end result will be  underscores ( _ ) in there place when viewed in the search bar and links.   Not only will the underscores be annoying, but if you were to change the name of the child page later, the links using that original URL TITLE will create page errors, until we refresh our database.

Ex.

URL Title Inputted

URL Title Outputted

Correct URL Input

faculty & staff
faculty___staff
facultystaff
faculty/staff
faculty_staff
facultystaff
