Rita Koett, MSN, CFNP, Nurse Practitioner
Rita received her undergraduate degree from UCLA and her Master's from the University of San Diego. She is a School Health Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. Rita works part-time at PLNU and also for the San Diego Unified School District, where she has been a school nurse for 13 years. Rita and her husband John live in Tierrasanta and have five children. Rita enjoys traveling, cooking, spending time with family and friends, and tending her menagerie of backyard animals. Her eldest daughter graduated from PLNU in 1995. "It feels great to be back!"
Karen Windoffer, CFNP, Nurse Practioner
Karen is another proud Point Loma Nazarene University graduate. Receiving her BSN degree in 1978, she spent several years working in critical care and emergency nursing. Graduating from University of San Diego in 1996 with an MSN Family Nurse Practitioner degree, she worked in the community clinic system and, since 1999, at UCSD Perlman Clinic Internal Medicine. Karen works in the PLNU Wellness Center as a Nurse Practitioner and as adjunct faculty in the PLNU Nursing Department for sophomore nursing. Residing in the Del Mar area since 1991 with her husband Bruce (PLNU graduate 1978) and children Lindsay (PLNU graduate 2004) and Nathan (PLNU Freshman), Karen is enjoying this new chapter in life. Having the opportunity to work at PLNU has been nothing short of a blessing. After taking a hard look at what full-time career options were exciting, challenging and enjoyable, there was nothing that out-shined the opportunity that unfolded here at PLNU.
Joseph Allen, MD, MS, FAAFP
Dr. Allen completed his Bachelor of Science in Applied Arts and Sciences, earning a double major in French and biology at San Diego State University in 1991. He went on to receive his Master's degree in molecular biology at SDSU in 1995. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine from St. George's University School of Medicine in 1999 and went on to complete his internship and residency at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center – Mt. Sinai School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency Program in Paterson, New Jersey, where he served as Chief Resident in his final year of training in 2002. Upon completion of residency, Dr. Allen became board-certified in family medicine and went into private practice in Point Loma. Dr. Allen was appointed consulting physician to the Pt. Loma Nazarene University Wellness Center in 2003. He completed his post-graduate fellowship training in primary care sports medicine at the University of California, San Diego in 2004. He received his board Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine (CAQSM) in 2004. For his dedicated efforts in teaching and community service, Dr. Allen was awarded the degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in July 2005.
Dr. Allen serves as Clinical Instructor for the UCSD Department of Family and Preventative Medicine, the SDSU Department of Athletic Training, and St. George's University School of Medicine. He serves as team physician for UCSD Athletics, Point Loma High School Football, Old Mission Beach Athletic Club Rugby, and the San Diego Rock 'n Roll Marathon, and he volunteers as house doctor for the San Diego Symphony. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Academy of Family Physicians and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee of Sharp Community Medical Group. He is an active member of the California Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
Rebecca Carter, M.A., IMF
Wellness Center Counselor
Rebecca Carter holds a B.A. in Education from MidAmerica Nazarene University, a B.A. in Psychology from Simpson University, and a M.A. in Counseling Psychology from National University. Currently, she is a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern gaining hours for the California licensure exam. In addition to her work as a therapist in the Wellness Center at Point Loma, she works at the Center for Enriching Relationships, a Christian counseling center in San Diego, and she is a Program Therapist at The Salvation Army’s Door of Hope, a group home for pregnant and parenting adolescents.
Rebecca has held several positions in higher education over the past seven years including adjunct instructor in the areas of ministry and psychology, coordinator for disability services, career center coordinator, mental health counselor, career counselor, athletic coach, and student services director. Assisting students during life’s challenges, personal growth endeavors, and relationship issues continues to be the motivation for her chosen profession. Outside of work, Rebecca enjoys running, kayaking, playing volleyball, surfing, and spending time with her husband, Mark, and their two chocolate labs, Sam and Eli.
