Wellness Center Services

We coordinate Health Services, Counseling Services, and Health Education. A team of nurse practitioners, counselors and health educators work together to provide a comprehensive program designed to aid students in their academic achievement.

We provide free services to all Point Loma Nazarene University students. There are charges for medications, injections, strep and other tests, labs, and physicals. The student may choose to pay these fees via cash or check or bill their student account at the time of visit. Please note, we are unable to facilitate private insurance billing.

Health Services

Wellness Center health services include free self-care shelf medications, assessment and treatment of injuries and illnesses, TB testing, immunizations, travel and prescription medications, consultation on any health issues, and student insurance facilitators.

Physicals

Physicals are offered as a courtesy and are limited to nursing school entry physicals, students traveling abroad, or participating in missions trips and university associated activities. There is a small fee that is dependent on the amount of time, paperwork, lab and/or complexity of required information. The form must clearly indicate that a Nurse Practitioner or Mid-Level provider is qualified to complete the form. The Nurse Practitioner on duty may refuse to do a physical if there are discrepancies in the requirements. Please call the Wellness Center to schedule an appointment at least two weeks in advance of when your paperwork is due.

Travel advice and medication

Students traveling for mission work or for pleasure may consult with the Nurse Practitioner regarding travel health needs. The Wellness Center, however, is not a travel clinic. Recommendations are based on the following sources:  www.cdc.gov/travel and current medical literature. Some vaccinations are available in the Wellness Center and prescriptions can be provided for other recommended travel medications. Students are encouraged to review CDC (Center for Disease Control) website information for their specific destination(s) before their appointment. There is a minimal fee for this service.

Mental Health Services

Personal brief assessment counseling is available in the Wellness Center or in the dorms in addition to group support, crisis intervention, and off campus referrals.

Referral System

The Wellness Center staff has developed ties with a number of practitioners in the San Diego area. These include physicians, urgent care facilities, counselors and dentists.

Eating Behavior

Representatives from the Wellness Center, faculty, staff and students make up this team. The group meets on a monthly basis to discuss program planning, resource gathering, and incident management.

Eating Disorders Specialists

Debbie Dinsmore
, a Marriage and Family Therapist, is available for private appointment needs on campus. This is a fee-based, confidential service. Students may use their private insurance.

Nutrition Counseling

Referrals are made to a registered dietitian who is available by phone to set up individual appointments for a fee-based consultation. Students may utilize their insurance coverage for this service.

Massage Therapy

A massage therapist is available one afternoon a week to provide chair massage for stress reduction. This is a fee-based service and gift certificates are available.

Peer Educators

This is a service program for students interested in college wellness topics. Peers work closely with the Wellness Center and Residential Life and meet weekly to develop skills for intervention, prevention and support.

Speakers

Professionals from the Wellness Center and outside resources are available for presentations in class, in residence halls or other venues.
