For any students living with cancer or in remission. We have an ongoing support group of students that are living with a personal diagnosis of cancer either presently or in their past.
Grief and Loss:
Have you experienced the loss of a loved one? Sharing experiences along with professional support is a valuable tool in overcoming deep grief. The Wellness Center counselors are available to offer support to those students who have lost a family member or close friend. This group will help you understand the process of grieving, help you cope with your emotions, and assist you in planning for your future without your loved one. Individual appointments are available as well as group support.
Hearts and Homes Divided:
Are you coping with the effects of your parents' separation and divorce? This group is for students whose parents have separated, divorced, or are in the process. Participants will learn about the short and long term effects of divorce on children/adults. The purpose of this group is to learn how to deal with and understand the impact that your parent's divorce may have on you, as well as to identify with, encourage and support other group members.
Healthy Transitions:
Research suggests that nearly 70 percent of university students feel homesick at some time or other, and in a recent U.S. study two-thirds of the students reported that it lasted more than one week, while for 18 percent homesickness lasted more tha n eight weeks. You’re not alone. Behind some of the smiles you see are other people feeling homesick too. If you think your homesickness is making it rough to fit in or concentrate on your classes, come and learn some healthy strategies to ease your transition.
Returning "Study Abroad" Students:
Could you be experiencing "REVERSE CULTURE SHOCK?" Many students who return from studying abroad describe difficulties readapting and readjusting to one's own home culture after living or studying in another culture. Students often describe missing or grieving their host family or culture, feeling distant from old friends, struggling to fit in or an unwillingness to fit in, confusion, feeling like an outsider in your own home, school or country. Sometimes these feelings or thoughts make the transition back to school here at PLNU tough. Often it is difficult to find people who can identify or understand what this is like for you or how profound your experience, while studying abroad, was.
S.O.S. (Survivors of Suicide):
The loss of someone close to you is often shocking, painful and unexpected. The grief that ensues when someone you care about and loved has ended his or her own life can be intense, complex, and long term. On top of all the grief that people experience after a “conventional” death, loved ones walk a gauntlet of guilt, confusion, and emotional turmoil that is in many ways unique to survivors of suicide.
