The Society for the Study of Psychology and Wesleyan Theology 2007 Annual Conference

Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, IL (near Chicago) - March 1, 2007

Psychological and Theological Responses to Suffering and Tragedy

The Society for the Study of Psychology and Wesleyan Theology (SSPWT) invites Paper and/or Symposium proposals on the theme: “Psychological and Theological Responses to Suffering and Tragedy” for its 2007 annual meeting to be held at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbannais, Illinois on Thursday, March 1, 2007. Examples of relevant topics might include the role of religious practices in the face of suffering and tragedy, the role of grief, suffering, and despair in the emergence of hope, grief and suffering in the therapeutic process, cultural dynamics that affect the experience of suffering, the role of suffering in spiritual formation, suffering and community, and the effects of suffering on individuals, couples, and groups. Proposals on topics not directly related to the meeting theme are also welcome. All proposals should bring some aspect of psychology and theology into conversation, and articulate a relevance to Wesleyan theology and/or the development of Wesleyan communities of faith.

The society council would like to encourage increased participation from undergraduate and graduate students. Therefore, SSPWT is pleased to open a section of paper presentations to all students. We invite those who are interested to present a proposal along with school affiliation and a brief bio.

Submit SSPWT proposals no later than October 1, 2007 to Mark Maddix, program chair, at mamaddix@nnu.edu. Proposals should include paper title, an abstract of 500 words (maximum), institutional affiliation (if applicable), and professional vita (if first-time presenter).

SSPWT council members look forward to your thoughtful response and reflections as we make preparations for next year’s conference.
