Women’s Studies emphasizes the concerns and perspectives of women and raises awareness about gender through—
  • Feminism Is Not A "F" Word
  • Speaker series, including talks by writer Lauren Winner, historian Elaine Tyler May, theologians Rebecca Chopp and Paul Chilcote, Islam and gender expert Huma Ghosh, poet Mary Crow and preacher Diane Leclerc.
  • "Stop the Violence"Week, raising awareness about violence against women locally and globally;
  • Panel discussion with recent graduates on “Why Women’s Studies?”;
  • Film forum and theater evenings;
  • Work Done, Work Begun: Women Creating Sacred Spaces conference on feminism and faith, co-sponsored with the Wesleyan Center for 21st Century Studies;
  • National Women’s Studies Association conference panel—Surviving or Thriving?: Women’s Studies and Gender Programs in Christian Higher Education.

Resources


The Women’s Studies Center houses a collection of books, journals and videos about women’s issues that is available to our community. The Center encourages scholarship and pedagogy that is inclusive of women across racial, class and cultural lines, and supports the research and achievements of women students and faculty, including—
  • Life Issues Forum for graduating senior women;
  • “Women in Science” discussion group for students;
  • Faculty reading group on feminist pedagogy;
  • Research lectures presented by PLNU faculty on topics such as Susannah Wesley, feminist autobiography, Flannery O’Connor, images of Deborah the Judge and Elizabeth I and the gendered construction of national identities in the 20th century.
