National Christian College Invitational at PLNU
Date:Friday, March 14, 2003 (All day) - Sunday, March 16, 2003 (All day)
I am happy to announce that at the Christian College Nationals for Speech and Debate (NCCFI), the Pt Loma speech team was named the Christian College National Debate Champions! There were five divisions of debate at the National Championship tournament we hosted this weekend, and Point Loma won first place in four of those five events, and won second place in the remaining debate event. We won first place in Open and Novice Parliamentary Debate, and closed out the Junior Division finals, meaning no final round was held since the top two teams were both from Pt Loma. In Lincoln Douglass debate, which we had never competed in before, we won the Novice Division (with three of the four semifinalists) and came in Second in the Senior Division.
In the overall sweepstakes race for all events (including individual speeches, Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, and Readers Theater) for the top overall programs we came in Second Place in the nation, behind a very powerful Cedarville squad, who will host the National Championship next year. The debate and individual events results are shown below. Special thanks to Professor Kathleen Czech for all her help not only in coaching the team but helping to host the National Championship and to Phil Rath for his leadership in both areas as well. We also greatly appreciate the efforts of our many alumni that volunteered their time to help judge, and of the home school debaters that helped us in too many ways to list.
We also want to thank all the support staff on campus that did such a great job helping us to host this National Championship event, even though many were short handed due to the break. There are so many who did so much I am afraid I will forget some, and I apologize in advance for that brain slip. I do not plan to be recuperated enough to think straight until perhaps Wednesday. :-) But we greatly appreciate the efforts of catering services, security, maintenance (especially move crew and house keeping), Nicholson Conference Services, the bookstore and Point Break Cafe, and Computer Services. You all did an amazing job. Too many of us take this campus and the terrific support staff that we are blessed with for granted. It is nice to have colleagues from across the country visit us, and almost to a person remind us of how fortunate we are to be here.
