NPDA national Championships Metro State College, Denver, CO

Our debate season has concluded on a distinctly upbeat note. At the NPDA National Debate Tournament in Denver, Point Loma was awarded the Third Place Yearlong Sweepstakes Trophy for the efforts of its Novices, Juniors and Seniors throughout the year compared to hundreds of other colleges and universities competing across the country. The United States Air Force Academy and the University of California Berkeley tied for First place. This is the sixth year in a row that Point Loma has ranked in one of the top six spots in the nation in the NPDA yearlong sweepstakes race. No other university in the organization can make that claim. Usually we finish in one of the top three spots.
The National Championship Tournament itself went extremely well given the relative youth of our current program. We also were awarded the 15th place Tournament Sweepstakes based on the performance of our top four teams. One of those teams was a brand new novice team consisting of Troy Funk and Dominique Marino. We also had two teams advance to the elimination rounds. Shannon Hutchison and Janae Magee-Parker advanced to the Quadra Octa Finals, and Jay Selnick and Gene Yonemoto advanced to the Triple Octa Finals. Gene Yonemoto was the 25th top speaker at the tournament out of nearly 600 of the best debaters in the nation in only his second year of debate. These results were due in large part to the coaching of Prof. Kathleen Czech and peer coach and team president Phil Rath. We also appreciated the help of alumni judging from Jessica Reichert and Dr. Bud York. Thanks for your support throughout the year.
