J.S. Bach’s contract as Cantor of St. Thomas’ church in Leipzig
stipulated––“In order to preserve the good order in the churches, [he would]
so arrange the music that it shall not make an operatic impression, but
rather incite the listeners to devotion”. J.S. Bach's fusion of the liturgical and
the dramatic provides a view of Christ’s final hours, and the Christian
believer’s response to this story in a manner beyond the greatest of Baroque
operas.
