2013 "Dealmakers of the Year" Business Breakfast

At our annual "Dealmakers of the Year" Breakfast we honor those unique individuals, firms, and collaborations that exemplify creativity, innovation, and ethical practices that create long term value for the business community in the San Diego region.

Congratulations to the 2013 "Dealmakers of the Year" Winners

Individual: Mac McLaughlin
RADM Mac McLaughlin, USN (ret.) has been president and CEO of the USS Midway Museum since its inception in 2004. His vision of the museum becoming an American symbol of freedom has become a reality. His achievements include national recognition of the USS Midway Museum, a cadre of more than 600 volunteers donating more than 125,000 hours annually, more than 11,000 annual museum members, and a museum and visitor destination that has become the most visited floating ship museum in the nation. Most recently, McLaughlin has been recognized for his "Save the Kiss" campaign, an eight-week initiative by the museum to preserve the waterfront statue of the iconic photo taken of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square as they celebrated the end of World War II in 1945.
Firm: Accion San Diego
Launched in May of 1994, Accion San Diego is a member of the Accion U.S. Network, worldwide leaders in micro-enterprise development. Building upon the experience of Accion International, Accion San Diego developed a successful lending methodology in 1994 tailored to local micro-entrepreneurs in Southern California's neighborhoods. With economic opportunity, these entrepreneurs can build assets and better provide for their families and communities. The firm provides micro-loans ranging from $300-$35,000. They help their clients build favorable credit histories and improve their business skills through training events. Accion San Diego has increased their number of loans and dollar amounts over the last year. They are a member of the nonprofit Accion Network, the largest network for microfinance in the US.
Collaborative: Scripps Institution of Oceanography and SoCalGas Co.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego (Scripps) and Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) have entered into an agreement focusing on the design of an innovative system in which algae consume carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from natural gas combustion and cost-effectively convert it into valuable byproducts such as biomethane, biodiesel and animal feed. The new collaboration between Scripps and SoCalGas includes an investigative research and systems engineering study to explore how algae production systems currently in development could most effectively capture industrial CO2 emissions. Targeted CO2 sources include: natural gas power plants, large engines used in natural gas compression, and water pumping and boilers used to produce steam for industrial processes such as enhanced oil recovery.
