3D Robotics was started by kid genius Mexican engineer Jordi Munoz, now 27, and Wired Magazine visionary Chris Anderson, 52. 3D Robotics, headquartered in San Diego, makes domestic drones, little guys costing about $400 to $1,000, not the $15 million jobs made by General Atomics. 3D Robotics develops innovative, flexible and reliable personal drones and UAV technology for everyday exploration and business applications. Their technology is used across multiple industries around eh world, including agriculture, photography, construction, search and rescue and ecological study. Remotely controlled drones can make for cheaper, more effective search and rescue operations, as well as hyperlocal deliveries. Perhaps the most curious application is in agriculture, in which farmers and ranchers could remotely keep tabs on the all their land and livestock without having to trudge into the fields themselves allowing for significant efficiencies throughout the industry.

San Diego County Office of Education
Monarch School is a public-private partnership between the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) and the nonprofit Monarch School Project. The nonprofit organization was initially headed by Ronne Froman, a former Navy admiral and former chief operating officer of the city of San Diego. Monarch School provides an excellent academic and supportive environment to homeless students in San Diego County. SDCOE provides approximately 40% of Monarch’s funding by covering the basic education elements of the school—teachers, aides, instructional materials, and an accredited education. The project provides healthcare, clothing and food along with enrichment and support programs including an after school program, tutoring, counseling, and expressive arts therapy and family assistance. Monarch School is the only program of its kind in the country serving K-12 homeless youth, and is a model for how a community can successfully educate homeless children to become productive citizens.
