PLNU is offering a new first-of-its-kind program in Bakersfield for working adults to earn their B.A. and two California teaching credentials in 2 1/2 years (8 semesters).

With this new and innovative program, you will:

  • Earn your Bachelor of Arts in Cross-Disciplinary Studies: Teacher Education
  • Earn Preliminary Credentials in Multiple Subjects and Special Education

Program format:

  • Designed for adults with the equivalent of two or more years of transferable college coursework
  • Attend classes one night per week and some Saturdays

  • Cohort model, small group learning

Details:

  • Program features - the new Cross-Disciplinary Studies Major has an emphasis in Teacher Education and an embedded Multiple Subject Preliminary Teaching Credential, and a Mild/Moderate Special Education Credential.
  • Cohort format - admitted students will be paired with a group of 20-25 students taking all of their classes together.  The cohort format has been proven to work well with adults returning to college by building support for each other as they balance work, family and now school. 
  • Class meeting times:  The courses are scheduled in a convenient format with working adults in mind.  Each 16-week semester students will be enrolled in three courses offered in this format:
    • One class will be offered on a week night meeting weekly for the first 8 weeks of the semester.
    • The second class will be offered on the same week night for weeks 9 through 16.
    • The third class will be offered on Saturdays, meeting about every third weekend. 
  • Admissions requirements:  Individuals with a minimum of 70 transferrable units, extensive experiences working with children, and a minimum of 25 years of age when courses start in summer 2014 will be interviewed for admission. 
  • Costs:  Tuition is reasonably priced and includes books and the Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) fees.
    • During the 8th semester students will be charged an additional $300 fee for each 8 week placement for student teaching.
    • Tuition for the program  is $500 per semester unit for the 72 unit program or approximately $36,000.  As you make cost comparisons be sure to include the essential fact that this program includes two credentials and the B.A. Degree while many adult degree programs only include the B.A. Degree.
