Class of 1949 Endowed Scholarship for Study Abroad
Nine years ago, the Pasadena/Point Loma Class of 1949 very generously set up an endowment to be used specifically to assist students studying abroad.  Scholarships of up to $1000 are now available to students!
Who: Students studying in fall or summer (preference given to full semester programs).

(Benjamin A.) Gilman International Scholarship

PLNU Students! This is a great opportunity to get funding for any location you choose to study in.  This scholarship is availible to a wide range of students; check out there website to see if you are eligible.

U.S. undergraduates can apply to receive financial support for study abroad programs worldwide through the new Benjamin A. Gilman international Scholarship Program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural affairs. The program is named after Congressman Ben Gilman, The legislation’s sponsor. The Institute of International Education, a New York-based non-profit organization, will administer the program through its Southern Regional Office in Houston, Texas under a grant from the Bureau. Established under the International academic Opportunity act of 2000, Gilman International Scholarships will provide up to $5,000 for American students to pursue overseas study for college credit. The Gilman Program aims to broaden and increase the study abroad population by aiding undergraduate students who are under financial constraints.

Boren Scholarship (National Security Education Program)

Created in 1991, the National Security Education Program (NSEP) focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security.

Boren Scholarships for undergraduate students, provide up to $20,000 for an academic year to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.  These countries include Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East.  The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Boren Fellowships are for graduate students, provide up to $30,000 for language study and international research.

Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security.  Boren Scholars also study less commonly taught languages.

Go! Overseas Study Abroad Scholarship

GO! Overseas is proud to support international education through scholarships available to students participating in study abroad programs. Scholarships are awarded each year in the amount of $1000. The scholarship is awarded based on the creativity and analytical thinking displayed through writing samples and/or video submissions.

 In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Gilman Scholarship Program, we are proud to announce the expansion of our summer awards to include all academic majors.  We anticipate this will be our most competitive cycle ever so please encourage your students to seek your guidance and utilize all available Gilman resources. Alliance for Global Education Scholarship

The Alliance for Global Education is offering up to two scholarships of $6,000 and up to 20 scholarships of $2,500, as well as smaller amounts of up to $2000 for semester programs and up to $1000 for summer.

Students must already be accepted into an Alliance program.  These will be need-based, with preference given to minorities and students from non-traditional majors.

(John) Gyles Education Awards

The Gyles Education Awards are available each year to students in both Canada and the US. They are the result of a private, benevolent endeavor established in 1990 with the help of a Canadian/American Benefactor. Full Canadian or American citizenship is required. Awards are available to both male and female students for all areas of post secondary study. A minimum GPA of 2.7 is required. Criteria other than strictly academic ability and financial need are considered in the selection process. Selected students will receive up to $3,000. Filing dates for mailing applications are April 1, June 1, and November 15. Students can received an application by sending only a stamped (US 34 cents), self addressed, standard letter size (No. 10) envelope to the following address: John Gyles Education awards, attention: The Secretary, P.O. Box 4808, 712 Riverside Dr. Fredericton, new Brunswick, Canada E3B 5G4.

National Geographic Glimpse Correspondent

The Glimpse Correspondents Program is an exciting opportunity for talented young writers and photographers who will be abroad for at least 10 weeks. The program encourages participants to engage with people from other cultures, to seek out thought-provoking experiences, and to share their stories from abroad.

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship

The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. Nearly 800 scholarships were awarded for study in 2005-06. Through grants totaling approximately US$500 million, recipients from about 70 countries studied in more than 70 nations

Interested applicants must apply for Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships through their local Rotary club.  Availability and timelines vary by Rotary district.

There are three types:
    * Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships: A flat grant of $24,000 for one academic year of study in another country.  This is the most common type of grant.
    * Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships: Help fund two years of degree-oriented study in another country. A flat grant of $12,000 is provided each year.
    * Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships: Help finance either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country. They provide a flat grant of $11,000 for three months and $16,000 for six months

Asia

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia

 Freeman-ASIA  provides financial support to American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need to study abroad for academic credit during the summer, semester or academic year in one of 15 countries/regions in East and Southeast Asia.  Award amounts vary from $3,000 - $7,000 depending on the length of study.

 The program's goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.  Upon their return to the U.S., students are required to promote study in Asia by sharing their experiences with peers on their home campuses and in their communities.

Awards of up to $3,000 are available for Summer 2012.

The online application for Fall 2012 and Academic Year 2011-12 programs will open on February 22, 2012. Award amounts range from a maximum of $5,000 for a semester/quarter program to a maximum of $7,000 for an academic year program.

Blakemore Foundation Grants for Advanced Study in Asian Languages

Plans to make approximately 24 grants available each year for the advanced study of modern Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Southeast Asian languages. Details and application forms are available on the site.

Bridging Scholarship and Morgan Stanley - Japan

The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project awards 100 scholarships each year to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan.  The scholarships are funded by donations from private foundations and major U.S. corporations.  Each scholarship recipient will be expected to send a brief report about his or her study in Japan to the ATJ office within 60 days of returning from abroad.

Award Amount:
Semester- $2,500
Year- $4,000

Eligibility:
Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Spring 2012 Deadline:

October 7, 2011

2012-2013 Academic Year and Fall 2012 Deadline:

April 6, 2012

Description & Eligibility for Morgan Stanley scholarship:
Morgan Stanley will award two $7,500 scholarships to undergraduate students who will be studying abroad in Japan during the entire 2012-2013 academic year.  Applicants must have an interest in economics and international finance, already be accepted to a program in Japan, and be juniors or seniors.  Applications are due in April of each year.

Applicants must submit an essay on one of several designated public-policy topics together with an application for the Bridging Scholarship program.  Morgan Stanley management in Tokyo  will make the final selection of scholarship recipients.

Foundation for Asia Pacific Education- STA Travel Scholarship

The mission of this foundation is to help young adults in North America become global citizens and leaders who understand Asia Pacific’s role as the hub of an increasingly interconnected world.  It works to raise funds to assist students in gaining cultural and academic experiences in the Asia Pacific region.
General Scholarship Amount:

$500-$1,500

STA travel is offering $10,000 in scholarships for students majoring in Photography, Film and Art, Travel and Tourism, International Business, International Studies and Foreign Language.
STA Travel Award Amounts: $1,000-$2,000
Deadlines:

    * Programs beginning September 1 through December 31, 2011: Deadline is August 31, 2011
    * Programs beginning January 1 through April 30, 2011: Deadline is January 5, 2011
    * Programs that begin May 1 through August 31, 2011 : Dealine is April 30, 2011

The Institute of International Education

Funding for the Freeman-ASIA Program has been approved for two years, beginning with the Summer 2011 term.  The application system will open in January 2011, and grants will be offered for Summer, Semester, and Academic Year terms.

 Detailed information will be available on December 1, 2010 on the program website 

 The Freeman-ASIA Program, generously supported by the Freeman Foundation and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), aims to increase the number of U.S. undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia by providing them with the information and financial assistance they will need.  Award amounts vary from $3,000 for a summer program to $5,000 for a semester/quarter program to $7,000 for an academic year program.  From 2001 to 2009, Freeman-ASIA provided scholarships for more than 4,000 U.S. undergraduate students to study in East and Southeast Asia.

DAAD

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the German national agency for support of international academic cooperation. DAAD offers programs and funding for students and others in higher education. Financial support is provided to over 50,000 individuals per year, as well as representing the German higher education system abroad, promoting Germany as an academic and research destination, and helping build ties between institutions around the world

Italy

Lemmermann Foundation Scholarship Awards

The Lemmermann Foundation awards scholarships to university students who need to study in Rome to carry out research and prepare their theses concerning Rome and the Roman culture from the Pre-Roman period to the present day time in the classical studies. The scholarship amount is 750 Euros per month. Applicants must be attending a recognized university, be pursuing a degree, and have basic knowledge of the Italian language.

Scandinavia

Finlandia Foundation

Students applying for Finlandia Foundation National scholarships for the academic year beginning the following September should submit an application by February 1. Applicants must be citizens of the US or Finland and accepted to an accredited institution of higher learning. Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate (sophomore or higher) and graduate students. Students studying subjects related to Finnish culture receive special consideration. Individual scholarships in the past have generally been in the $500-$3000 range.

Turkey

Study Abroad Turkey for Minority Students

The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) in cooperation with DiversityAbroad.com are awarding $2,000 semester, $1000 summer, and $500 short term scholarships for study abroad programs in Turkey.  Applicants must be undergraduate African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Native-American students who have already applied and been accepted to participate in a study abroad program at a Turkish University.  Click here for more information.

Gilman Scholarship

This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

The program aims to support students with financial need, diverse ethnic background, and from a variety of institutions.  It strongly encourages students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia.
 
Eligibility:
The Gilman Scholarship is open to all US citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below.

  • The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of their study abroad.
  • The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
  • The applicant is studying abroad for at least 4 weeks in one country.  Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least 4 weeks.
  • The applicant is studying abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the State Department's current Travel Warning list.
  • The applicant is studying in the fall, spring, or academic year terms including winter inter-sessions.  Summer only programs are not eligible.
  • Award Amount:

Over 1,200 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000.

AIFS annually awards more than 250,000 in scholarships to summer and semester students who submit application materials demonstrating high academic achievement. Scholarships are available for both summer and semester programs.

CEA Scholarships

Multiple scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 each. The number of scholarships given will depend on the quality and quantity of applications. Multiple Academic Affiliate scholarships also will be awarded in each category in the amount of $1,500 each.

(Robert B.) Bailey Scholarship (CIEE)

The Robert B bailey Scholarship is intended to promote the participation in CIEE’s international Study Programs of individuals or members of groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in study abroad, especially ethnic minority students. Applicants are asked to specify the group to which they belong and which they believe to be underrepresented in study abroad.

(John E.) Bowman Travel Grants (CIEE)

The Bowman Travel Grants were established in memory of John E. Bowman, Executive Director of CIEE from 1952 to 1979. These awards provide assistance to the students participating in CIEE study or volunteer programs in non-traditional locations. They help to defray the costs of travel.

IES Abroad offers up to $2.15 million in scholarships and financial aid each year.

SIT Study Abroad Scholarships

About one-third of those who seek scholarships from SIT Study abroad receive financial assistance to participate in our programs. Awards generally range from $500 to$5,000 for semester programs and $300 to $3,000 for summer programs. Awards are made on consideration of both merit and need. In addition, scholarship funds are used to ensure that a diverse group of students can participate from all regions in the US and abroad-and from a variety of colleges and universities.

SIT's NEW Pell Grant Match Scholarship

SIT now offers a new scholarship for undergraduate Pell grant recipients. The Federal Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate students to promote access to postsecondary education.

SIT will automatically match a student's Pell award used for a semester program with SIT, thereby placing high-quality, field-based study abroad programs within greater financial reach of a wider range of undergraduate students.

DiversityAbroad.com Scholarship (sponsored by AIFS)

DiversityAbroad.com, in cooperation with AIFS, will award twenty $1000 scholarships for students studying abroad during the 2010-2011 academic year. Six will be offered in the fall, six in the spring, eight in the summer.  Click here to see if your program qualifies.

DiversityAbroad.com Scholarship (sponsored by Semester at Sea)

This scholarship is meant to increase access to Semester at Sea's global educational opportunities to students from diverse and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.  Up to ten scholarships of $6,500 will be awarded for the summer voyage.  Up to five scholarships of $13,000 will be awarded for the fall voyage.  Scholarship award amounts are equal to 50% off the cost of the least expensive cabin category available at the time of confirmation.
