PREPARING FOR GOOD HEALTH AND SUCCESS AT PLNU
Congratulations upon your acceptance to Point Loma Nazarene University! PLNU places a high priority on the health and safety of our students. We require enrolled undergraduate students to have physical examination and up-to-date immunization forms* electronically submitted to the Wellness Center via the PLNU patient portal prior to New Student Orientation.
Our medical team is excited to help you maintain high levels of good health and wellness as you pursue your academic goals. Knowing your needs before you arrive on campus will help our team to promote your total health and wellness throughout your journey toward graduation.

PROOF OF HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE
All undergraduate students registered on the main campus are required to have health and injury insurance coverage. For your convenience, a PLNU Student Health Insurance Policy is automatically billed to undergraduate student accounts each semester. You can choose to decline or accept the PLNU Student Health Insurance plan on your PLNU student portal.
Health Insurance Processes for New and Readmitted Students
Eligible new or readmitted undergraduate students registered in the fall semester will be automatically enrolled in the Plan and the cost for the fall coverage term will be billed to the student’s account unless the student waives coverage by presenting satisfactory evidence of comparable health insurance coverage to the University by the fall insurance waiver deadline date (see waiver deadline dates below).
If a student chooses to waive coverage for the Fall, coverage will be automatically waived for the Spring/Summer as well unless the student wants to be covered under the Plan for the Spring/Summer coverage term. In that case, the eligible student must contact the Wellness Center at (619) 849-2574 prior to the Spring/Summer Insurance Waiver Deadline Date (see Waiver Deadline Dates on page 6). PLNU will verify the student’s previous health insurance information is valid for the Spring/Summer term.
Students should contact or visit the Wellness Center immediately should changes to their personal health insurance plan occur at any time during the academic year to discuss your needs for maintaining health insurance. Eligible new and readmitted undergraduate students registered in the spring semester will be automatically enrolled in the Plan and the cost for the Spring/Summer coverage term will be billed to the student’s account unless the student waives coverage by presenting satisfactory evidence of comparable health insurance coverage to the University by the Spring/Summer Insurance Waiver Deadline Date (see Waiver Deadline Dates on health insurance brochure page 6).
Please note: Students electing to decline the PLNU Student Health Insurance plan--- Uploading your valid health insurance card with card numbers entered on the portal completes the process for declining the university health insurance plan. You will be charged for the full price of the PLNU Student Health Insurance if your insurance card is not uploaded to the portal or expired. Once charges are place on your account, refunds are not available after the second week of classes.
NEW STUDENTS PREPARING FOR MEDICAL CARE WHILE AWAY FROM HOME
The PLNU Wellness Center provides limited primary care and brief counseling services for undergraduate students. Freshmen students with medical/dental/psychological conditions requiring frequent follow up appointments should select a primary care physician in addition to other health care providers a semester in advance of attending the university. For example, students entering in the spring should use the previous summer and fall to connect with local health care providers.
Be advised that parking on campus is unavailable for freshmen students, and that the Freshmen Vehicle Policy will remain in effect. It is strongly recommended that transportation be arranged in advance through services such as ZipCar or Car2Go for physical therapy, medical, counseling, chiropractic, dental and other frequent health related appointments. Additional transportation suggestions include:
- ZipCar (hourly or per day transportation) zipcar.com/plnu
- Car2Go (hourly or per day transportation) San Diego car2go
- MTS Access (documentation of diagnosis required for low cost round trip transportation. Contact Disability Resource Center for more info)
- Non-Urgent Medical Transport (round trip transportation arranged through Wellness Center; fees billed to student account)
