March is upon us with only three more months until our students are home for the summer. I know the hot topics around campus are Spring Break plans and where and who they are going to live with next school year. In this edition we have an article about what is the PLNU norm for Spring Break plans and the process of room draws and living off campus.
As a parent, I learned Spring Break may be a little different to us than it is to students. I fully expected each of them to come home and spend their entire week with the family. I soon learned that this is a vacation and many times they plan road trips, going home with roommates, and mission trips. I hope you enjoy the article by Dustin Towery, a PLNU senior, who gives us the “Inside Scoop” on how students view their time off.

Hello Point Loma Parents!
As winter comes to a close at PLNU, spring break is on the minds of students and parents alike. Parents really want to see their kids. Kids miss their parents but have been working very hard since the fall. They are ready to relax and have a respite from schooling. Some students accomplish this by staying at home while some head off on a trip with friends. This is vacation time for your sons and daughters. If they stay at home during this time, they will most likely want to sleep, eat, do laundry, watch TV and sleep some more. Remember to be accommodating of these needs. Put up with the odd hours and what seems like a lack of motivation as they need some down time after the rigors of study and testing at school. Social activity is nearly constant while in college and some may simply need a break from that, too. If your student chooses to travel and you are concerned about this decision, be calm and let them know why you are worried. Make sure they understand the potential dangers of spring break travel and destination activities. Remember that your kids have become more responsible while at school so give them credit for that. Don’t jump to conclusions, but lead them through your conversation to a position of good decision making.
Some students will want to use this time to line up a summer job or internship. Many kids have developed an increased awareness of our monetary society and experience a desire to become integrated into it. You need to support these first independent steps while offering only well thought out guidance from the sidelines. If your kids grow to “own” their career decisions they will develop a stronger foundation to build upon.
Regardless if your son or daughter travels or stays at home for the spring break, let them relax, trust them and accept the changes that college life has brought as they are maturing and learning about life. Support wise choices and responsible behavior, agree on expectations and help them prepare for that last push of the spring semester.

Spring Break Airport and Train Shuttle Transportation
Leaving Point Loma:
The Shuttle will leave outside the Prescott Prayer Chapel each hour, on the hour.
It will stop at the airport and then proceed to the train station before heading back to campus.
Returning to Point Loma:
When returning, please call the driver below to notify him of your location (Airport or Train Station). He will give you an approximate pick-up time. A few minutes before this time, please stand at the curb and prepare to flag down the driver.

2011-12 SFS NAMED SCHOLARSHIP
The SFS Named Scholarship application allows current students to apply for multiple endowed scholarship funds with one easy application. The application will be available through the student portal by mid-March. Your student will be sent an email reminder within the next two weeks. This is one application for over 20 scholarships! Be sure to have your student take advantage of this scholarship opportunity. Your student can also talk to their academic department to see if they have any scholarships available.
TUITION MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
If you have a monthly payment contract with Tuition Management Systems (TMS), please check to ensure that the amount of the contract covers the balance owing on your PLNU account. If you need to make any adjustments, contact TMS directly at http://www.afford.com/ptloma or (888)285-3052. TMS does not have access to your PLNU account balance, but they can help you adjust the amount of your contract based on information you provide to them from your statement of account. You’ll want to be sure to keep an eye on your PLNU statement, in case there are changes to registration or any additional charges added to the account (such as fines). Any remaining balance owed can either be paid directly to PLNU or added to your TMS contract. Be sure to make timely payments to TMS, as delinquent contracts will be cancelled and returned to PLNU for immediate collection.
Financial Holds will be placed on all delinquent accounts on March 18th. This hold will prevent registration for any subsequent semesters, and will prevent participation in housing draws. Note that pending financial aid will not be taken into account, so please be sure to follow up on any sources of pending aid to ensure that it posts prior to March 18th.
1098-T TAX FORMS
PLNU has contracted with ECSI to provide 1098-Ts electronically for 2010, and these tax forms are now available through your student’s portal. Form 1098-T is a tax summary issued by PLNU to all students registered during a specified tax year, and includes tuition and required fees, adjustments made for prior years, and scholarships or grants received by the student. Room and Board, living expenses, and textbook costs are not included.
Information on Form 1098-T is reported to the IRS and can be used by students to claim certain tax credits or deductions. More information is available on our 1098-T telephone line: (619)849-2799.
To view and print the 1098-T, students will login to the student portal and click on the “Students” tab.
• Click on “Financial Services”
• Click on “1098-T” on the left hand side navigation bar.
• Follow the instructions to access the 1098-T tax form through ECSI’s website.
If you run into any difficulties, please call ECSI at (866)428-1098.
Note that Box 2 of your 1098-T will reflect amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses during the 2010 calendar year. Box 1 should be blank. We recommend that you provide this form to your tax preparer, as neither PLNU nor ECSI is able to provide you with any tax advice.

What Are Room Draws?
The Office of Residential Life is responsible for assisting close to 1,700 students who live on campus in a variety of residential settings. This year, room draws are scheduled for April 18 – 28, 2011. Student’s personal PLNU Housing Application will be available at their residence hall box on Wednesday, March 2.
All Housing Applications must be completed no later than Monday, April 4, 2011. This application is the student’s way of indicating where he/she wants to live and who he/she wants to live with. Failure to complete a Housing Application yields their placement to the Office of Residential Life. Current students already living off campus do not need to fill out a Housing Application.
Room draws are conducted in a lottery style to ensure fairness for each student.
In order for students to participate in the room draw process, they must be free of financial holds and registered for the fall 2011 semester. Priority registration dates are set for April 4 – 15, 2011.
Where can I live? Residence Halls by Cohort
Residential Life at PLNU is based on a progressive living model. Intentionally, students live within “cohorts” of freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. First year students are treated as sophomores in the process, regardless of academic units accumulated. Cohorts are defined by the following:

Each residence hall is designed for a particular student population based on cohort. These layouts are subject to change based on needs and demands.

Students who will be Seniors during the 2011/2012 academic year may self-select to live off campus. That information is detailed later in this message.
Students who will be Juniors during the 2011/2012 academic year may apply for the off campus wait list. Juniors opting to be on the wait list must proceed through the on campus housing process. Notification of off campus living for Juniors is a rolling notification from April to July.
Off Campus Applications will be available on Wednesday, March 2 in the Office of Residential Life on the 3rd floor of the Nicholson Commons.
Living Off Campus as a PLNU Student
While the large majority of our students live on campus, some do choose to live off campus. Current on-campus students who will be Seniors for the 2011/2012 academic year (those who have 89+ units including the spring 2011 semester) with a valid grad check can self-select to live off campus. This is done by completing your housing application with an indication of “off-campus” no later than Monday, April 4th, 2011.
Current on-campus students who will be Juniors for the 2011/2012 academic year (those who have 57–88 including the spring 2011 semester) may apply to be placed on the off-campus wait list. Submission of an off-campus application does not guarantee off campus approval. Students on the off-campus wait list must complete a Housing Application and proceed with room draws. Notification of approval to move off campus is a rolling notification from April through July and will be sent to the pointloma.edu email account.
All students currently living on campus must participate in the room draw process. Failure to complete a Housing Application yields your placement to the Office of Residential Life.
Other Important Information
Living on campus is for the entire academic year. Once you confirm your spot, it is yours for both the fall 2011 semester and the spring 2012 semester.
Fall 2011 Housing Applications for current on-campus students will be at the hall box on Wednesday, March 2nd. Off-campus students wanting to move on campus must contact Jackie Armstrong for a housing application. All Housing Applications are due on Monday, April 4th.
Current study abroad students should contact Jackie Armstrong for assistance with the housing process.

What Do PLNU Students Do During Spring Break?

What is it that Point Loma students enjoy doing most during Spring Break? Are they living large like the movies show? Are they heading home to relax and indulge in home cooked meals?
There are students who see the break as a chance to get away from school and work and hang out with their friends. Other students pack the vans, fill the seats, and road trip for the week, while some will choose to relax on a ship and sail the pacific. For the students who want to explore the world, they will book flights to go backpacking in Costa Rica while others will take trips couch surfing through London. Not all students see the break as a chance to relax though. Many choose to use their days off serving the community or going on short-term mission trips. This year, President Brower and 40 students are heading south to Rosarito, Mexico, to build a church and volunteer, one of many service projects Point Loma offers during the break.
For me, the way I spent my time during Spring Break has been different every year. I have taken a road trip to travel up and down the coast of California with eight of my closest friends; I have relaxed on the beach with family; and one year I went shopping for wigs in Palm Springs with my grandma. As for my senior year and final Spring Break, my days are going to be filled with work and getting ahead in school, or at least catching up!
Whatever students may decide to do during Spring Break, one thing I know is that we definitely need the break and we make the most of it!
Offices of Strengths and Vocation Spring EXPO Days
OSV offers EXPO Days in the fall and spring of each school year. These are two or three day of comprehensive career programming. Please encourage your students to take advantage of all the events offered on campus during this time.

Students are invited to join former professional athletes for dinner and an evening of networking and vocational advice. They have the opportunity to engage in conversations about how they applied what they learned to their current professions.
