Getting Started: How?
If you are a Nazarene group, you will need to work through the volunteer mission arm of the Nazarene church, Work and Witness. Specifically, you will coordinate your trip through the Nazarene Border Initiative. The Border Initiative Team monitor all volunteer work throughout northern Mexico and they will be able to accurately match your group's needs regarding scheduling and funding with the needs of Mexican churches. In addition to selecting a location, they will also coordinate the service projects and trip details with you.
We ask that you approach this project without an agenda and are open to go where you are needed most. We advocate as much relational interaction with the Mexican church and community members as possible. For example, most churches are willing to cook authentic meals for your group, which is a much richer experience for all involved -- and cheaper, even. Look for ways to support the Mexican leadership by letting them direct the project.
To begin the planning process, contact the Border Initiative at: borderinitiative@nazarene.org. In your email, identify your group, the timeline you have to work with, and funds available.
By going through Work and Witness, you are then eligible to purchase excellent coverage of their insurance policy. It costs $3.25/person/day. The policy will allow you to seek local treatment, return to the U.S. for care, or, if severe enough, receive “Life Flight” helicopter rescue. To read the policy in full, visit the Work & Witness Resource website and click on: “W&W Global Insurance Policy Pamphlet” under “International Forms”.
To order the insurance by credit card, go to the Work & Witness Resource website (linked in preceeding paragraph), click on "Global Insurance Credit Card Processing" under "International Forms". To complete the on-line form, you will need to set up an account with a password and submit the full name, address, date-of-birth, and citizenship of each participant.
To order the insurance by check, go to the Work & Witness Resource website and click on "W&W Insurance Form - Global Insurance Application". Fill in the spreadsheet with the full name, address, date-of-birth, and citizenship of each participant. Calculate total cost and mail/fax/email the spreadsheet and send in payment.
For general information about Work & Witness, please visit their home page. To access the forms mentioned above, select the "Resources" tab in their home page's left sidebar.
Most likely, your group will assist the church in giving Bible lessons for children of the area. We suggest that you follow the church's lead with lessons, but it is always helpful to have some resources to lean on. We've provided helpful Spanish phrases for working with children, games, songs, and a sample set of lessons.

Crossing the Border / Passport Questions
As of January 1, 2009, all those crossing the Mexico - U.S. border are required to have a passport. Visit our Passport Guide page for a step-by-step guide on how to file for or renew your passport.
For minors in your group, you will also need to carry completed a "Mexico Travel Consent Form" for each participant younger than 18. You can find this form below under the "Consent Forms" heading and customize the form for your specific group.
Though it is not necessary, you may want to bring along additional picture identification as an added safety precaution. Birth certificates are not necessary. If you prefer to bring yours, please do not bring the original with you. Make a copy and keep in a secure place.
For more information, visit the U.S. Border Patrol Website.
There are various forms of consent that you may find necessary to use for you trip. We offer you the forms we use. Be reminded that they are not meant to be taken as legal advice and these forms are intended only as samples to be used according to the advice of your own legal counsel.
