PLNU’s graphic design program had a glowing year.

Largely under the leadership of adjunct professor MaeLin Levine, co-founder of San Diego design firm Visual Asylum who helped form the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) San Diego Chapter, PLNU students have gained valuable experience within the San Diego design community.

"MaeLin's reputation is legendary in the San Diego design community as both a brilliant designer and an inspiring educator and we're fortunate to have her,” said David Adey, PLNU associate professor of art and design. “She has made an incredible contribution to our program this year and the results speak for themselves. She had a vision to change the format for our senior portfolio review, and worked tirelessly with the Offices of Strengths and Vocation to make it happen. The event was a tremendous success. Her energy and enthusiasm for our students is inspiring and it's a pleasure to work with her!"

On May 12, nine PLNU graphic design students participated in the 15th annual AIGA San Diego Annual Portfolio Review and stood out.

Out of the 56 students from San Diego graphic design programs such as San Diego State University, San Diego City College, and The Art Institute of California – San Diego, PLNU students represented three of the 11 total awards handed out at the review. Libby Spangler took first place overall as well as the best branding category and Kristina Micotti won the best illustration category. Sixty respected local design professionals judged the student portfolios.

In April, PLNU held its own portfolio review on campus, where PLNU graphic design students displayed their work for public viewing and then participated in one-on-one reviews with a selection of distinguished design professionals in San Diego such as Scott Mires, partner and creative director of MiresBall; Tyler Blik of Blik Design (who hired a PLNU student at the review); and Bobby Buchannan of Buchannan Design.

Before the show, graduating seniors rated their classmates’ portfolios and selected “Best of Show” recipients. There were 15 graduating graphic design students who rated their peers’ work:

Licensure for Professional Counselors has finally come to California!

The Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) licensure became law as of February 2010 in California after passage of SB 788. The Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) is responsible for regulating the LPCC and other master’s-level licensure programs in the State of California including Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT) and the Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW).

Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) PPS School Counseling candidates who began their graduate study prior to August 1, 2012 and will complete all requirements for the 48-unit Master’s degree and PPS Credential before December 31, 2018, may qualify to pursue the examinations for this licensure.

PLNU received notice from the BBS in February 2012, that it’s 48-unit Master’s degree in Education with a Concentration in School Counseling with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential, includes coursework that meets 7 of the 9 core content areas defined by the BBS which meet the requirements for LPCC licensure under Business and Professions Code (BPC) section 4999.32.

Therefore, by virtue of PLNU MA/PPS candidates graduating from this 48-unit program that has met seven of the nine core content areas and been approved by the BBS, they may be eligible to satisfy the remaining two core content areas, Principles of the Diagnostic Process and Research and Evaluation by completing post-master’s degree coursework at an accredited or approved institution.

The Board of Behavioral Sciences has full discretion to make final decisions about whether or not a candidate’s degree has met all requirements for this licensure.

Please contact Dr. Dione Taylor, Director of Pupil Personnel Services at dionetaylor@pointloma.edu with any questions.
