Follow this process step by step and you'll be on your way to affording an incredible PLNU education!
Steps to Apply for Financial Aid
Financial aid for graduate students at PLNU consists primarily of unsubsidized federal direct loans. Degree-seeking graduate students who are 1) enrolled in three or more units per semester, 2) meet the university's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy, 3) are in good standing with prior federal loans, and 4) are citizens of the United States (or eligible non-citizens) are eligible for federal direct loans. Qualifying graduate students may borrow up to $20,500 every two consecutive semesters, depending on the student’s calculated budget for the award term.
Step 1:
File a FAFSA
- Go to www.fafsa.gov
- Use the 12/13 FAFSA to apply for aid if your first semester is before Summer 2013 Quad 2
- Use the 13/14 FAFSA to apply for aid in subsequent semesters

Step 2:
Review your graduation date on the student portal
- Log in to my.pointloma.edu and click on the "Students" tab
- Click on “Biographical Information” in the “Profile Information” section
- If your “Planned Graduation Date” is incorrect, update it by clicking on “Edit My Academic Information”
Step 3:
Complete online entrance counseling
- Visit www.studentloans.gov, log in, and select “Complete Entrance Counseling”
- Be sure to select the “graduate” type
- An electronic report will be submitted to PLNU upon successful completion
Step 4:
Sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN)
- Visit www.studentloans.gov, log in, and select “Complete Master Promissory Note”
- Choose the “Subsidized/Unsubsidized” option
- An electronic report will be submitted to PLNU upon successful completion
- If you have completed a Direct Loan MPN in the past at another institution, you may not need to complete one again. Please contact us if you have already done so. A Direct Loan MPN is good for up to 10 years.
Step 5:
Submit verification documents
- As a result of filing a FAFSA, the federal government may require additional documentation
- The PLNU Student Financial Services Office will notify you if you have been selected for verification
Step 6:
Receive PLNU award letter
- After all applications and paperwork are completed and processed, you will receive a Financial Aid Award Letter via email
- The award letter will state aid amounts for which you are eligible and how funds will be disbursed for the loan period.
- Follow the instructions on your award letter to accept, decline, or reduce your loan amount.
